2003 7.3 FN74 Plan/Assembly
I'll be starting install in the next week or two, so here's the (current) plan:
Fuel path:
tank > ball valve > 100m screen > check valve > "T" > A1000 > HIH > filter > temp switch > FPR (return to "T") > solenoid (normally open) > check valve > Heart > heads
The main deviation from the standard is mainly that the FPR is very late in the system and there is a solenoid to eliminate veg flow while the veg pump is running. The pump will run with the solenoid closed, which will return fuel to the "T" before the pump, circulating all the Veg from the "T" to the solenoid, so that when it's up to temp, It's ALL up to temp- when the line is good and hot, the veg in the filter is also warm. The pump starts to run in this "warm-up" stage based on a coolant-triggered temp switch. The solenoid opens based on the temp switch at the FPR.
I haven't found any system diagram that would allow less unheated oil to the engine upon changeover to veg. Remember- I'm in MN, looking at the potential of 3AM, -20 or -30*F plowing runs... proximity to the engine will take ALOT of time to warm a filter containing a quart of solid vegoil. I may even HIH the FPR return with the coolant return...
The wiring schematic is looking pretty complicated at this point, but I think I'll be manually switching everything at first, then add the automatic stages as time goes by. Some of the features are as follows.
1) Full diesel mode- pump is off, solenoid is closed.
2) Warm-up mode- pump is on, solenoid is closed ,circulating oil
3) Veg mode, solenoid opens, veg flows
4) Shut-down- ignition is off, fuel system relaxes to diesel mode, while turbo timer idles engine
5) Full manual, veg-on override- if ignition is turned off in this mode, and audible, annoying alarom will sound, which can be disabled with a momentary button- alarm resets with each key cycle
6) Turbo timer bypass- another momentary that will kill the turbo timer and the alarm, allowing a quick shut-down on veg... aka "drive-thru mode"
7) Fully automatic... no, you don't need a Class III license... but this way, I can send the Mrs (or anybody else) out without fear of any steps being forgotten.
Tell me what you think- I plan to use this as my "personal" conversion advice forum, so I appreciate any input you may have...
