7.3 IDI WVO conversion help

I am looking to do a duel tank setup, my question is what all do i need to modify to run the veggie oil I was thinking i would do a hotfox in the tank and a hose within a hose heated fuel line from the pump to the selector valve. Do i need to heat it at the fuel filter as well? Also do i need to add any additional filters? I was thinking about filter the oil before it ever touches the tank. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You definitely want to have a fuel filter even if you filter it like crazy before it gets in the truck. You never know what little floaty's the oil will pick up in your tank etc.

And you definitely want to have a fuel filter dedicated to your WVO side Otherwise purging your system will take forever and waste a lot of fuel. You can buy a heated filter housing or wrap the heater hose going to your Hose-in-hose around the filter 3-4 times. If you don't heat the filter, thats a big pile of cold WVO to try and get moving when its time to switch over to veggie.

If you've got access to the WVO then that's the way to go, but there are a lot of guys on here that will give you horror stories about it. So its a good idea to search it and know what your getting into really well. If you do it right, you won't have any problems.

I run wast motor oil, its a little thinner and much eaisier to work with in my opinion. I have a PABiodiesel centrifuge, I prefilter into a 55 gallon drum with a 150 micron filter, then heat the drum to almost 400F to get rid of water, make 4 passes on the centrifuge, then into the truck.

My front fuel tank now has two 5/8 copper tubes running through it with hoses coming from my heater hoses. After about 15 min of driving, my front tank is hot to the touch. Need to insulate it better, and i really want a line heater for this winter, but i when your a cheap "butt" you do what you can

wont those be caught by the stock fuel filter?

Why would it take longer without a filter?

I was planning to heat the WVO tank and the line going from the pump to the selector valve. What setup are you running?

Thanks for the replies!

He's saying you want one filter for the diesel tank, and another for the VO tank.

You always want to start your motor on diesel, that means you have to purge the VO before turning off the engine.

If both tanks share the same filter, it will take a looong time to purge the VO.

Like 1987IDI said, you really want to learn all you can before doing your conversion.

Good luck!

So i will have to instal another selector and fuel filter and run an entire line up to the engine compartment? I cant use the stock parts? I have heard that some people just heat the oil in the tank and use their stock setup. Im guessing from what you guys are saying that that is bad? Sorry for being such a newb, just trying to learn. Thanks!

That is the best way to do it. Separate filters on everything. The way mine is set up, especially because i have a separate water separator, i just switch tanks about 10 or 15 min before i get home for the night. With motor oil you can start on it if you have to, but WVO is a different story, its much much thicker.

K, gotcha. Im gonna do a separate heated line all the way to the selector (which im gonna mount under the hood). Can i use the factory selector or do i need a new one? Can i get by without doing a heated filter for the WVO since the line will be heated within a foot of the filter & IP?

Don't forget about your factory heater if its still on there. You should be able to use your factory selector.

1987IDI where do you get your waste motor oil? I just bought a 95' f250 and plan on running SVO in it. I live in San Diego so I don't plan on running a two tank system. From what I can tell as long as I have a heat exchange, additional inline fuel pump and maybe a different fuel filter I should be ok. I can't find any info that says I need to mess with the injectors or glow plugs. Is there something I am missing? I plan on running oil through a centrifuge to clean.

People can't throw away oil fast enough. I've found a lot of guys that change there oil and dump it into 55 gallon drums behind their garage, and now that its full, they have no way of moving it or pumping it out. I have a portable pump and a forklift attachment to pick up drums.

If you've got a 95, i believe that means you have a power stroke. I wish i could give you more info, but i don't pay much attention to the things i find on PS running oil.

If you need some guidance on an AMAZING company selling centrifuge setups, PM me and I'll give you some contact information.

dg3787 - You may want to think twice about not running a two tank system. Which I believe your 95 is like my 97 and has two stock tanks (maybe)? It's not a good idea to start a cold engine on cold WVO. Not only does it not burn well, but most say its gets coked up in your injectors etc. And if yours has a mechanical fuel pump like mine, that thick cold wvo will kill it pretty quick.

If you want I could send you a design of how I put mine together. I built it myself patterned after the Plantdrive and Golden fuel systems for the 94-97 PSD.

1987IDI- How well do you filter the waste motor oil that you burn? And do you do WVO as well, ever? I'm coming up on oil change time and wondering if I can filter it and put it in my tank.

I do have two tanks. I would like to see what you've done to your truck. I haven't found many details on what the pre-made systems for my truck have. My email is ernie0502@yahoo.com
thanks
