Am I correct? WVO

Ok, I have been reading this and looking into this stuff for a while. I now come to ask those of you who currently run the WVO.
I would like to try this on the cheap and see if it is for me.
Here is my plan, will it work?
Gather and filter the oil.
Put oil into one of my tanks and just run it through the normal fuel system.
Cary a spare fuel filter at all times.
No heated lines at this time or heated tank.

My concerns are that I read about special filters/heated filters etc, I will do that if I go to this full time, but just for a trial I do not want to go to the expense of a special set up more than is needed.
Thanks
Doug

Re: Am I correct? WVO

Lots of guys do nothing but mix it with diesel. Some mix it with gasoline.

Re: Am I correct? WVO

I've been running a very high mix of WVO to diesel. I've clogged my first filter today, and its pretty much straight WVO. Its not clogged completely, but i do get the Fuel Filter light flashing me in the face every so often... I'm gonna back down on the mix ratio, get some more diesel in there. I also like to add Power Service to it...

Re: Am I correct? WVO

Hi Doug,

I've been running a ratio of about 40% WVO for the last 1,000 miles or so. I used lower ratios prior to that. This is the highest ratio I'm going to run because I don't want to have any problems with engine deposits.

To this point I have been adding WVO for a total of 3,000 miles now and have not clogged a filter yet. I change my fuel filter at 30k mile intervals and this one is at 38k now. I've had a filter with me figuring this one would plug up but so far it hasn't.

From what I read you can't run WVO straight unless it's heated. Since I wanted to see how this stuff would run, I decided to mix it until I determined if I wanted to make a system to run it straight.

My mileage has remained about the same. I can’t tell for sure because I don't know exactly how many gallons of WVO I put in at fill up. But I can calculate it within .5 gallon or so. I add approximately 10 gallons of WVO at each fill up. At the last fill up I figured 18.2 MPG with 50/50 highway and city driving. I usually average 18~19 MPG so this is in the ball park.

Good luck

Ray

Re: Am I correct? WVO

I did not realize that you had to mix it with Diesel or heat it. Most of what I have read is about heating it. My biggest thing is getting it. I do not want to invest a lot of money only to find out that I won't mess with the gathering process.
So it looks like a mix of about 50-50 and see how it goes for a while?

thanks
Doug

Re: Am I correct? WVO

for whats its worth, I added about 1/2 gallon of store bought virgin veggie oil and poured it into a full tank of diesel. That works out to about a 1.5% mix.

Got the best mileage out of my truck yet!!!

I've never got more than about 16mpg mixed driving (city/freeway) and this time I was up into the 16.6 range. So a 1/2 mpg gain.

Next tank I think I'll bump it up to a full gallon, which would get me into the 3% range.

OMCUSNR_RET,

"Don't use WVO. Its a polution problem."

Interesting comment based on what information?
Any references would be appreciated.

Re: Am I correct? WVO

From what I've read, it is MUCH more readily biodegradable than even biodiesel. Less toxic. Sounds like a hidden agenda to me.

Bio-D actually biodegrades faster than the sugar water they use as a control sample.

It has been shown that burning vegetable oil at a low temperature can create acrolyn (or whatever its called).

However, sufficiently heated and high temp burn shouldnt.
