Any Future for Home Brewers

I am becoming increasingly concerned in my area (NC) about the availability of Methanol, Lye, and Koh long term. I find it a bit surprising anyway that the average Joe can walk up a buy this stuff without too much fuss. I am afraid that guys like us who make our own brew will be left out in the cold one day in efforts to decrease Meth Lab productions and to regulate homebrewers. There seems to be an ever increasing amount of people jumping on board the homebrew boat. The more the merrier in my book but how long will it be before Uncle Sam sticks his nose into it all. Does anyone have a feel for what may be going on governmentally in regards to homemade biodiesel? If things begin to look grim are there any contingency plans in the works to allow the homebrewer to continue to get supplies and to run his reactor?

Re: Any Future for Home Brewers

I for one am not concerned. Meth production requires alot of ammonia, ephedrine and other chemicals different from biodiesel production.

And besides, what meth dealer in his right mind would just walk into a chemical supply store, order a huge shipment of alcohol, KOH and then have it delivered to his house?

I agree with your logic and common sense here and am not concerned for me personaly. When however does the government and common sense go hand-in-hand. They could very well shut every one out for the sake of the rotten eggs out there. There are already reports of Chemical houses refusing to sell to those claiming to be making biodiesel.

Re: Any Future for Home Brewers

I think one of the bigger issues will be the availability of waste oil. The large waste management companies are lobbying state congress in many states to make the transportation of waste veggie oil illegal meet license requirements that most of can't including a hazardous waste permit, bonds, spill management procedures ect. THEY don't want us making the stuff because we are reaching into their resources. There are several states that have basically outlawed howe biod production or make it so cumbersome you have to clearly break laws to make it. At that point you must make a decision if it is worth it or not. Even as it is, some of ya'll are already outside the legal limits by purchasing 55 gallon drums of methanol and 50 # bags of KOH. So at some point the whole thing will either be very underground or will be taken over by the bigger biod producing companies.

Re: Any Future for Home Brewers

Now there's an idea: Go into the underground Methanol and KOH business. I have no real idea but my gut feeling is we have between 5 and 10 years before this gets big enough that the government will somehow try to put a stop to it. Either by taxing the hell out of us,(which they already do but I talking about a home brewers tax of some sort), requiring some unaffordable license to home brew, or just plain outlawing home brewing altogether.

Hope I'm wrong though.

Re: Any Future for Home Brewers

I think you guys a getting a bit off the wagon here. The supply of methanol is not that hard to get. We race a dirt car and that is what we run for fuel in it. So don't think that be a issue. but I may be wrong. Just mt two cents worth..

Re: Any Future for Home Brewers

I agree with the methanol deal. We run a Junior Dragster and a Junior Funny Car and we bought 3 drums for us and a friend last year. No one ever questions us about anything like that.

BTW our friend always has a minimum of 55 gallons on hand and I know that Alcohol Funny Cars Transport at least a 55 gallon drum to every race they go to. I imagine they have about 6-7 drums in their garage most of the time.
