Anyone making Biodiesel in Kansas?

Hey folks, I was looking into making Biodiesel to help save on the all mighty dollar. I think $2.59/gallon will be the low for this year. I live in East central Kansas and have two diesel pickups that I use one is a '82 chevy 6.2L, the other is a 94 Ford PSD. I was wondering if anyone in Kansas has a set up that is up and going that I could look at. I am a hands on kind of person and would like to see how it all works. Or if anyone knows of any groups or conferences that they could direct me to I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Re: Anyone making Biodiesel in Kansas?

Well, if you can't find anyone, you can likely get it done yourself. I highly recommend the Infopop forum(s) to learn more about all aspects of making/running biodiesel and/or wast veg oil straight.

Infopop forums

First things(s) to asess:
1) How is your source for used oil? Can you get enough? (do you live in/near small, medium, large town?) Collection of oil is a significant amount of effort factored into the whole process.

2) How is your access to chemicals? (methanol and KOH (or NaOH)? (KOH can be ordered online, but its expensive that way (~$60+ for 20 lbs). Even at that price I have been able to get costs to ~70-75 cents/gallon (not including electricity, water, labor, using fuel driving around collecting oil).

If the above 2 items can be dealt with, go for it.

The only thing even slightly complicated is titrating (measuring the amount of free fatty acids in your oil)and the final calculations for the amount of KOH/NaOH used.

And the inital setup cost is present, depending on how much of a scrounger/cheap (LOL no offese meant) you are.

And now is the time(season) to get started too.
