Barrel Pump for Methanol

I'm sure this issue has been addressed before, but I'm leery of using the search utility on this forum

I'm going to buy a 55 gallon drum of methanol and then divide it up into 5 gallon carboys for later use.

What I need to know is, what is a good pump that is cheap and easily obtainable but isn't going to crap out over time due to the corrosive nature of methanol?

Thoughts and experiences please.

Re: Barrel Pump for Methanol

I use one of those barrel siphon pumps (Mechanical). For same purpose, to divide a 55 gallon drum into 5 gallon scribner jugs. The wife is terrified of storing a 55 gallon drum... Go figure. Takes about 25 to 30 minutes to empty the barrel.

Re: Barrel Pump for Methanol

I was going to use a Harbor Freight pump just like the one that I have been using for transfering WVO, but I read that it wont take corrisive fluids for very long before it takes a dive.

Do you have anymore information about that barrel siphon pump and where I can get one?

Re: Barrel Pump for Methanol

I use air pressure.
Made a pickup to thread down the 3/4 bung hole with a 90 and a valve on it.
In the 2" bong hole, I put a bung off of a plastic barrel with a tire valve installed in it. I use a tire inflator to pressurize the drum.
It does not take much pressure to get it going on 3-4 psi.
The pick up I made using a length of 1/2 sch 40 steel pipe, on the bottom end I put a notch in it so it would not plug up sitting on the bottom of the barrel. I then took a 3/4" schd 40 steel nipple about 3 or 4" long. I stuck the 1/2 up through the center of the 3/4" (had to make it fit) then brazed the end of the 1/2" just below the threads on the 3/4", that way I did not mess up the threads. When installed in the barrel you have a 3/4" pipe thread male sticking up, add a 90 on that another nipple to a valve then an adapter to reinforced 3/4" plastic hose and wha la!
No effort what so ever!

Re: Barrel Pump for Methanol

Siphon Pumps are available in a lot of places. Here is a picture of one at this website.

web page

Also, to pour out the last 5 or so gallons the device at this website might be useful.

I said 3-4 psi, you do not think that temp fluctuations get the pressure up that much or MORE? I'd be willing to bet more than that, ever hear it hiss when you remove the bung?

Re: Barrel Pump for Methanol

Still you have a pressurized vessel with an explosive fuel. No thanks, ever hear of the Apollo 1 fire?

What ever, all I am is saying while it is sitting there is storage it has more pressure on it than when I use my method of fluid transfer.

Re: Barrel Pump for Methanol

Yeah Apollo one was pressurized with PURE oxygen, quite different from a fire hazard stand point.

Re: Barrel Pump for Methanol

Just the same I dont feel safe with pressurizing a barrel of methanol.

At 15psi of pure oxygen, as in the Apollo 1 fire, aluminum burns.

I just dont want to have an overflow of an alcohol all over my shop floor.

None of us do. What happens when the seals give out on the hand pump we are using?
I would venture to say with some speculation on my part, that a pump made for methanol, hand/electric/air powered or what ever would be way more than I would want to spend.
For a real safe way to despense it, use a barrel rack that you tip to horizontal when despensing, then stand it back up when storing.
I have such a rack just takes up to much room.

Re: Barrel Pump for Methanol

I'm going to talk with my methanol supplier tomorrow what they use for methanol barrel pumps.

I figure better safe than sorry.
