let me know sounds right for a 40 gal batch 40gal oil 8gal methanol 1.7lbs of lye

I didn't do the metric conversion but the amount of lye should be 4 grams per 1 liter of oil plus whatever your titration calculations figure out to be. If you are using new oil, then you can just use 4 grams per liter.

Yes -

40 gallons oil , 8 gallons methanol, depending on titration - 28 oz of lye.

what will happen if i use too much or too little lye

Too much lye and it turns to jelly. Too little lye and you dont convert as much oil to Bio-D as you could have.
