bio-diesel

Anybody out there using bio-diesel? Would prefer to give a few extra cents to American farmers than to the middle eastern countries.

Re: bio-diesel

Rob,

I've been running 5g/tank (b-13) since new w/out any problems at all. I'd use b-100, summer, & b-50 winter, if I could afford it.

It's still pretty pricy $3.16 w/ rd tax here.

There is a good bit of information down in the alternative fuels area down in the other area here. If you are interested in making your own, Maria (Mark or girlmark) Alovert is one to pay attention to. I buy commercial, because its much less hassle. I know some are running S/WVO, but I don't think its good for the air. It puts out a carcinogin thats rather nasty.

ANywho, bio will make the truck run quieter, I have not noticed any performance decline, although the fuel economy is about 1 mpg less than w/ #2. Bio can be run in any cut/percentage. The big 3 auto makers will say no more than 5%, but they say the won't honor a warrenty repair w/ bad gas too.

By all means, give it as much as your pocket book will allow. Its nice knowing you're not giving money to Al queda.

Re: bio-diesel

Ford doesn't recommend anything over B5 in their diesels. I run B2 in every tank.

Re: bio-diesel

I don't know what you guys are all worried about. I make no bones about the fact that I run B100 in my psd and it couldn't run any better. I'm not worried about about Ford and my warranty. I'd be more worried about doing major mods to my truck than using Biodisel or SVO. You have to realize that Rudolph Diesel designed his engine to run on peanut oil, and diesels ran on peanut oil for years, before the nasty byproduct of gas became the norm. Of course the big auotmakers want to scare the public into conformity. There are folks that literally have 100's of thousands of miles on there biodiesel vehicles - it's not anything new. There is a rental car company on Maui that has psd 250's and 450's for their heavy work and they run straight B100. Now yes, it can be expensive to buy B100 and that is a legitimate reason for using a blend like B20, but being worried about damaging your PSD is not an issue.

That is just Ford and International being overly cautious. You can run B-100 in the 99+ trucks for the entire life of the engine.

Ford's stance is, they are not in the FUEL WARRANTY market. If you got a bad batch of regular diesel, ford is not responsible for repairing it. The fuel company that sold you the bad fuel is.

Since Bio-D is still relatively in its infancy in regards to being readily available, and the ease at which you can make it yourself, A 5% mix (B-5) allows for you to put in a pretty bad batch of fuel, and still be able to drive the vehicle.

But if the Bio-D meets ASTM fuel spec. 100% it baby!!!

Re: bio-diesel

B-100 definitely made my truck run smoother.
I pretty much run B-20 or some blend close there of most of the time.
No ill effects and actually running Bio-diesel has LESS cold start wear due to better lubricating properties over petroleum diesel.

Check out these sweet "at-home" kits from biodieselsolutions.com.

I attended one of their once a month free workshops last week and those guys are doing things right.

They set up a co-op to collect meat free WVO (the best grade) from a chip and tortilla baker local from them in San Jose, CA.
They share the fuel with peole who collect and every one wins!

The kits are high quality and don't expose you to the dangerous stuff you mix the WVO with to create biodiesel ='s WVO+lye+methanol.
Very user friendly and quality albeit a little pricey.
Anyway, after you buy the stihl or kit, it costs .70 cents to make boidiesel versus paying the going rate at the pump....

Long live true "American Diesel"!

I like the stuff and wouldn't run in my 04 6.0 unless it was for real.
