I would stay away from the fuelmeister kit, there have been many documented 'meltdowns' involving the plastic tanks used in that kit, plus the fact that they want you to pay 3 grand.
I built an Appleseed type of biodiesel processor that uses an old water heater for under 300 bucks.
It's pretty simple to put together and operate. I make about 20 gallons of biodiesel every couple of weeks, takes me about 2 hours to mix up a batch and I let it settle out for a week or so.
There are more details to that for sure, but most of your questions should be answered either here or on the website sited above.
I know that my old 6.9 loves biodiesel, I lost a little power at the start, but regained it as the crud was cleaned out of the fuel tanks. Plus the fact that the exhaust smells like chinese food

in case it's not clear from the rest of the forum, there are two options you may be thinking of:
a. make biodiesel- any mistakes when you're learning happen in the garage or backyard . see www.biodieselcommunity.org for details on how thats done and for an introductory article about the process. You can build your own processor for under $200 or buy several levels of 'kit' and other parts from www.b100supply.com or www.utahbiodieselsupply.com
b. convert your vehicle to SVO ('straight vegetable oil'- oil that hasn't been turned into biodiesel yet)- that's considered as little more experimental sometimes, but it works well for most people especially ones who are slightly "mechanically inclined". The drawback is that if anything goes wrong you're dealing with it on the side of the road. THe advantage is that fuel is cheaper once you get the system installed. You can build your own kit or buy one from companies like:

Does any body know about these bio diesels kits, such as costs, type of oil used, and is it worth it. do you lose power, etc. thanks for any help!

Mike,
Tell us more what your thinking about as for as use, what resources you have available such as garage/shed facilities ability to purchase the chemicals and collect/transport waste oil. I see your in Maine so either way, SVO or Bio, temps are going to be a concern not only for making it but using it.
Do you have the time to make it? The skills to build a setup (basic plumbing and electrical). Seems you can spend as much as you want to on a home built or even a kit.
And Mark, your wrist much be feeling better, good response!
