Biodiesel destroys rubber???

I have done some reading on BD and want to start making it from free deep fryer oil with one of fuel meisters kits. One reason besides the fact the kits are too much $$ that I havnt starting making and running BD is that I have learned (correct me if im wrong) that if i ran 100% BD that because its acidic it destroys rubber. I have a 96 psd, would it destroy my fuel lines and injector o-rings or are they synthetic rubbers that would be ok? Is it true ford suggests using only 5% BD because of this?

Re: Biodiesel destroys rubber???

a. dont' buy a Fuelmeister there's more wrong with it than just 'too much money' (though that's a major reason). Here's a collection of posts about the FUelmeister, summarised here:

http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/groupee/...1/m/7021065911

and

b. biodiesel destroys some types of plastics and rubber. It's usually a problem on old VW's and old Mercedes which have injector spillover lines that can be damaged by it. Older Fords dont' seem as susceptible to this. The same way that biodiesel damages rubber, is similar to what ultra low sulfur diesel does. So most vehicles made in the 90's and later seem to hold up to 100% biodiesel, as they were made for future ULSD use or with generally more robust plastics than earlier models. There's no specific cutoff year but generally few people have problems beyond injector spillover lines (which aren't a concern with teh Powersmoke, right?}.
for comparison, my 83 F-250 ran B100 for two years plus with no problems (three years later it still doesnt' have biodiesel-related problems, I stopped driving it a year ago for brakes reasons and haven't sold it yet...)

Re: Biodiesel destroys rubber???

Though I don't do Biodiesel, I do process WVO; I can say don't buy the commercial fuelmeisters or any other commerical junk for processing biodiesel.

Your better off making a custom processor such as the appleseed simply because you can tailor it to your needs such as the space you have to work with, not to mention cost would be significantly cheaper.

If anything I'd order one of the plastic cone bottom tanks if anything commerically.

Biodiesel/WVO is a way of life, you'll always have the pump, it takes determination to stick with BD/Veg.

Re: Biodiesel destroys rubber???

I checked out the appleseed plans and it looks really simple and inexpensive, something I can do no problem. Theres no way I would buy a fuel meister now thanks to everyones input. I hope to start making BD in the near future.

Re: Biodiesel destroys rubber???

us plastic has those tanks cheap, but i would only use one for the methoxide? i priced all the junk in that kit and could build it for around $600? but my 75gal appleseed cost me $20 and the few other parts i might have $200 in it? girl mark's book is priceless!!!!!!
