Im for PA and have been trying to get into making bio diesel...every restaurant i got to uses a huge recycling company MOPAC. and from what they tell me its free. so my question is how is a guy supposed to compete with that, and whats my best plan of action to get used grease?
you need to make 'really good' friends with a restaurant owner... the problem is that the owners hear people sayin "i want your oil and ill be here asap to pick it up "and when they dont show as promised it puts a bad taste in their mouth and screws it up for the next guy.. if you find a regular source DON'T mis pickin up the oil even if you have to give it away ( or maybe sell it) just keep lookin youll find somethin
If I'm running a restaurant, I want a professional that I can count on, on time every time, to pick up my used fry oil and other grease. So I'm going to look for a company that specializes in running his route on time every time, regardless of weather, vacations, broke down truck, family problems or any other excuse for being late for the pick up. When the container is full, it's full and needs to be dumped right now, not next week when you get back from vacation.
So include reliability in your sales pitch. And then stick to anything you promise. Else you'll be one of those that ruins it for the other guy.
I am being professional...i did all that even made up a contract to pick up the wvo and all...its just like this MOPAC company has a monopoly here in pa.
dlip, try this... offer to make the owner some fuel so he can run it in his personal/company car, truck , van... my investor has 10 restaurants ... he paid for the processor and all related items.. i make all the fuel, he gives me all the oil, we each pay for our own chemicals ( if there is any cost left over , we sell the excess oil to the SVO guys.. it usually pays for all our chemicals..)
Yep, you just have to be persistent, maybe throw in that; even though MOPAC is picking it up right now for free, it was not long ago they were charging for the service and may go back at to charging any time, you will be free always. Secondly, you may want to reconsider making your own if there is commercially available bio in your area, processing takes up quite a bit of time when all things are considered.

Dirtcheap, You are a genius! What a great deal to work with someone, all you have to do is make it, and everything else was free for you, super smart move!! Kudos.
its only free when we sell enough excess oil..if we dont then its around $.54/gal which aint bad either..my investor just got us set up with his buddy who has a couple or restaurants.. i cant complain , i did get VERY lucky when i fell into this deal...
