I am 17 and this summer i am going to save up and buy a 92-94 F350 4x4 to drive when i go to collage. My old 300 doesn't get good milage and i hate the fuel prices.
My dad and I have been discussing Making Biodiesel.
I have a couple of questions.
If i get a Fact. Turbo truck. What mods do i need to make to run Veggie Oil?
Is it cheaper to make than to buy?
Does it affect the power or milage of the truck?
Thanks
DT

First, veggie oil and bio diesel are two different things. bio diesel requires not vehicle modifications unless you get and older vehicle with natural rubber fuel lines.
To run straight veggie oil(SVO) you will at a minimum need to add a heated tank and selector valve. The older body style truck that you are looking for had a second tank option. Do some searching here for fordnut74 or CPUNeck. They are both running SVO and have been successful.
Bio diesel is cheaper to make than buy for right now. Most small restaurants and bars will give you the oil for free.
Power and mileage have been said to be slightly affected but not very noticeable.
What is the cost per gallon to make Bio and SVO
What is in bio diesel? Is it a blend of WVO and Diesel?

Welcome to the world of diesel and veggie. I think you have the right idea. Get the truck and run it essentially for a quarter the cost of any other vehicle. Or... even less.
Raw material cost for blending biodiesel will run about $.50 to $.60 per gallon. That's for methanol and sodium hydroxide (lye). Waste veggie oil is usually free but ask before you start dumpster diving.
Girl Mark has a $12 book you I strongly urge you to buy. It shows how to make a biodiesel reactor for $150 or less. She's a regular poster on this forum so look for her name.
Filtering is required for both but the biodiesel and the waste veggie (in a heated tank as a secondary fuel). I wouldn't skimp on this though. Filter bags are about $3 each. How many gallons you can get through a bag depends on a lot of factors.
I have a 'tower' of filter bags so that the heated veggie flows through one, then the next finer micron rating, then the next finer, etc. I pre-filter through a $2 paint screen that fits into a 5 gallon pail. Then, I use the following micron ratings: 200, 100, 50, 25, 10, 5. That's WAY more than most do but I'm a stickler for filtration.
I use metal 55-gallon drums fitted with a $10 heating element from a household water heater.
Start reading the posts on this forum as well as the others. It may sound like Greek at first but you'll start catching on before you know it. Once you get the hang of it, a life of greasiness is pretty simple and a real conversation piece for your friends.
Welcome.
Todd

Bio diesel is a vegetable oil (waste or new) that has been "transestrified" with methoxide (a combination of lye & methanol). Its technical name is Fatty Acid Methyl Ester or FAME. The chemical reaction during transestrifcation precipitates glycerol out & forms cetane molecules. You need about 20% methoxide per weight to get biodiesel. You have glycerin left in the bottom of the tank, and biodiesel floating on top.
Biodiesel (B-100 or 100%) can be mixed in any proportion with regular #2 or #1 diesel. I would recommend you have a couple of spare fuel filters available, because Bio-D is an excellent solvent, and will clean out your fuel system of any old contamination (which will wind up in the filter).

Well i guess this is the way i'm going to go when i buy my diesel.
I can probally get the veggie oil from the local Mc D's as a bunch of my friends work there for free.
Which is better to run? Bio diesel or strait oil?
Will an IDI truck be a good canidate?
Do i need to run a fuel additive to keep the IP lubed?
I really think i'll like this. I think it would be cool to have something different. Plus when my buddies complain about the cost of fuel i can just laugh in there faces. lol
Thanks for the help guys

Run the biodiesel, straight vegetable oil will require modifications to your fuel system, i.e. switches for tanks, tank heaters and there is a specific process to run SVO in which you warm the engine and SVO first with diesel fuel and then switch over to SVO.
Biodiesel will lubricate far better than any additive you could add to diesel fuel. Just a 1% use of biodiesel will increase the lubricity of fuel oil by 65%.
IDI engines run really well on biodiesel, in fact there are indications that they may run better on biodiesel than DI engines. However there are some 7.3 PowerStroke users here on this site that have been using biodiesel for quite some time with no ill effects.
Remember to just have a couple extra fuel filters handy when you start using biodiesel as it will clean out all the crud from your tanks and lodge it in the fuel filter. A minor inconvience for something that will make your diesel run far longer.

Veggieavenger.com is not my site- it's my friend William's. I promote it heavily.
We have an equipment plans forum there- www.veggieavenger.com/media will get you there and that has plans and photos of biodiesel-making equipment that people have built. As the photos upload feature of veggieavenger is dead now, I"m going to start a new equipment site at localb100.com soon (in the meantime here's a very rough work-in-progress about making biodiesel, at www.localb100.com/wiki
Thanks again!

i guess i'll try to start this summer if i make enough money. I've always liked the 92-94 body's DRW and 4x4 but they never made any.
What do i need to make biodiesel?
Where do i get the supplies

the only thing i don't like about the Stroke is that it is electronic.
And i heard they cost a butt load to fix.
but i won't be ignorent. I'll test drive one when i start looking for a diesel. and if i like it i'll probally buy it as long as it's low milage
