Can I make Biodiesel w/ used motor oil? I can get it by the truckload.

I'm starting to figure out how I can make the Biodiesel but I needed to know if it can be done w/ used motor oil since I have access to tons of the stuff.

NO!!

Bio-Diesel is made from VEGETABLE oils, NOT PERTROLEUM based oils.

All they can do is recycle the motor oil and re-process it back into other petroleum products.

Sorry!

You could think about buying or making an oil drum drip oil heater for your sheds or shop, maybe a greenhouse. Sounds like you can afford to keep as warm as you want it to. Just an idea to think about.

Afraid I must agree with ford forgotten. Veggie is organic, engine oil is not. In the old days big rigs used to run old motor oil through their fuel tank, but Do not do that to your motor, or the environment.

Re: Can I make Biodiesel w/ used motor oil? I can get it by the truckload.

Not that I'd recommend this, BUT...

We just had a new member join the 6.9 forum. Truck has almost 500,000mi without a major rebuild on the motor. Everyone on the forum has always advised against adding ANYTHING to the fuel except for Stanadyne fuel treatment (made by the same company that builds our pumps). A few members asked this guy what his secret was to getting that much mileage out of one of our IDI motors. He said the only thing he's ever done is add all of his used oil AND tranny fluid back in to his fuel tanks, which of course goes completely against what everyone has been saying.

Just lucky? Dunno...but 500K is a LOT of miles.

Re: Can I make Biodiesel w/ used motor oil? I can get it by the truckload.

you can get away with that on the old IDI style motors, but the unit injectors of the 94 and up powerstroke dont like it. In fact, Ford specifically states NOT to add uto tranny fluid to the fuel. So they knew about that old trick.

Plus, when those old engine oils burn, they have even MORE pollutants that just regualar diesel.

Re: Can I make Biodiesel w/ used motor oil? I can get it by the truckload.

I'd be pretty worried about it even on my IDI. No idea what additives you might find in tranny fluid, and used oil is nothing but a concentration of a bunch of junk you're trying to get OUT of your engine anyway. Only possible benefit I could think of was IP lubrication, but I'd rather use an additive that's made by the pump manufacturer.

Re: Can I make Biodiesel w/ used motor oil? I can get it by the truckload.

Use it for heating.

You can make your own waste oil heater with a drip-type burner. They work, but they are hard to regulate and require a wood fire to get going. If you want to get fancier, you can build a Babington burner. But again, it's DIY, and it would be a lot of work to build one with autoignition and thermostatic control. If you don't mind the inconveniences though, it's cheap, fairly clean, and effective. I wouldn't put one in an attached garage, though.

There are several commercial waste oil heaters available that offer all the modern conveniances, but they start at a couple grand. Here's a web site for one: Lanair

I wouldn't mind heating a small outbuilding with it, like a shop.
Wouldn't care about regulating it, would just want to burn and produce heat.

Any plans/kits out there?

Re: Can I make Biodiesel w/ used motor oil? I can get it by the truckload.

Here are some. Do a Google search and you will probably find more.

Mother Earth Waste Oil Heater
Waste Oil Burner Project
Homemade oil/waste oil burners

One drawback to most of these is that they put out way too much heat to heat "a small outbuilding" -- probably 100,000 BTU's or more. I suppose you may be able to scale them down somewhat, especially with a Babington burner. However, oil needs a hot flame to burn cleanly, and if you make it too small, you may have a hard time getting it hot enough.

Re: Can I make Biodiesel w/ used motor oil? I can get it by the truckload.

The Mother Earth News article was great. I'm planning on getting out of high-tech in the next year or two and that's exactly the type of info I was looking for. That'll heat my new workshop (once it's built) quite nicely.

Thanks for the pointer...

I'm glad you found it helpful. If you end up building one, let us know how it works out.

Sure will. It's not on the immediate event horizon, but it's on the list.

Re: Can I make Biodiesel w/ used motor oil? I can get it by the truckload.

Hi Guys! I have to disagree with some of you guys that say you cannot burn petroleum oil in your diesel. A diesel is an oil burning engine by definition, Diesel fuel is a petroleum product right? I have been using straight hydraulic oil, about 20wt., for about 15K miles now without any change in performance. I would not burn used motor oil though because of the combustion byproducts increasing the pollutants emmited from the exhaust. You cannot call this type of fuel " Biodiesel" though. It is still Petroleum fuel.
