collection pump?

What is being used to collect waste oil from restaurants? I was hoping to use a 12 volt pump from HF but that p.o.s won't lift like it says it will or prime itself. So what I am thinking now is a sump pump that I have, but the bad side is, I'll have to bring my gen. to power it. I have read many posts of people using a vac. container, but I don't have a vac. pump, or a container large enough that I could pull enough vac. on, to collect 40/50 gals. of oil. Re: collection pump?

I am using a similar setup. 1/2Hp sewage pump (replaced from a kitchen pump chamber-works fine without the spagetti inside), 25' of pool vac hose, a couple of plastic barrels and a TitanIndustrial 7.5Kw diesel generator and I'm good to go. I don't remember the brand/model of the pump but it's plastic housing and stainless motor case with a magnetic float switch. I was going to take the float off but it actually leaves about 3 inches of oil in the bottom of the barrel so it doesn't suck in all of the free water and sludge.

I have been looking for an old porta-potty vac tank and pump system around the 200-300 gallon size but they are hard to find used. Most guys use em till they rust thru and/or implode one day. I have heard of several others using trash pumps.

Re: collection pump?

I did use a trash pump, but made myself a sucker tank from a used 250 gallon propane tank. The trash pump was a lot of hassle, but that was mostly because the suction line I was using was too stiff and bulky. If I was to go back to it, I would get some good tubing from US PLASTICS.

I second BlueMule!! The Salsbury sales folks stand by their products.
Great folks to deal with!

I also have their pump, starts every time, pull the choke, pull the rope and I'm a running!

Re: collection pump?

I'm currently using the 5 1/2hp trash pump...works great so far. I don't know about how it will do in the depths of winter.

Beware that when the oil is warmer these trash pumps can move a LOT of oil very quickly. A couple of buddies tried one, filling a 55 gallon drum. They fired up the pump and before they knew it oil was shooting out of the drum.

A quarter throttle is enough to fill a drum in two or three minutes. Anybody have hands-on experience with these drawing cold oil... say 32 degrees?

Mine is the same generic 5.5hp OHV motor but it came with 3" inlet and outlet and it also starts everytime unless someone forgets to put gas in the tank.

32º! That's way to cold for me to be outside. I went to work at 3:00 AM today and just about froze at 45º

Re: collection pump?

Rag,

I'm using one of these right now http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...70_47671_47671 I've been collecting for a month or so and have collected about 250 galllons with this pump, so far so good! It pumps 3 to 4 gallons of minute through 20 ft of 1" hose on the suction side and pushes it through another 20 ft of us on the fill side.

Re: collection pump?

Thanks Stefan, that "looks" like the one they sell at Utahbiodiesel.com so maybe I'll give that a try.
I thought of a trash pump, but I figured if I have to run something, it may as well be my generator.

Re: collection pump?

The roaming sales guy was tryin to dump a whole truckload. So it was part of a larger buy. Couple of generators, gas compressor, cutoff saw, couple pressure washers....I'm not sure of the price now also because it was a couple years ago but I think in the $1800 - $2300 range. But it'll probly outrun a dozen gas burners, unfortunately their gensets don't offer the auto idle that is nice on a construction site for fuel and noise.
From what I can find the diesel engines are built in china (no one in the USA will build the damn things) by a honda copycat. The gas engines are an exact replica of honda down to screws and gaskets.
Only issue I've found is that during start and shut down the severe torque will make the thing try to jump off the tailgate. I would love to bolt that little 10HP diesel in a go-kart }}>>>>... . . . .

Any other info ????

Oh, yeah. It starts in winter too, has a compression release lever.

Re: collection pump?

Right now, I'm carrying home 5 gal pails of WVO that are saved for me. I pump them into a bigger container when I get them home with a pump from redlinepumps.com. I use a 110 volt one now but also have a 12 volt model that I'm going to mount in the back of my truck next spring. That way I can leave the pails on site and just pump into a holding tank. The 110v model that I have, will empty a 5 gal pail in 52 seconds.

Re: collection pump?

After reading this forum I tried the chevy oil pump. Seems good and it's dirt cheap, $14 at Autozone plus 30 min.work. You can use a variety of power sources. I used a cordless drill. You will have to sign up to see the pic's
