After reading all of the info on SVO/WVO here and on the Greasel Forum, I am not clear if or how I can burn Veggie in my '03 7.3. Do I have to add lye and methanol to the veggie or just filter and heat it? Maybe I am trying to make it too simple??
If you are just running Veggie, it needs to be filtered, and heated. This requires modification to the vehicle. The methanol and lye are for making biodiesel, which is a direct drop in fuel for your OEM tank and requires no modification to the vehicle.
Don't feel bad, this is such a radical departure from the norm, that most, including myself are at first baffled by the thought of using old grease for fuel. So to confuse you further, the answer to your question is "both". For me, the simplest is to filter it and run it as is. I have not yet installed any extra parts in my truck , and run just fine using 20% diesel, and 80% filtered Waste vegetable oil(WVO). With lye, methanol, and some mixing, you can make what is known as Biodiesel which can run in any diesel vehicle anytime. Just takes more work than simple SVO.
Thanks Gearhead! I understand now that we are talking either/or.
My Dad and sister live in Alpharetta, and I will probably be heading up that way in a month or so. I would like to see your FORD SVO and how you gather and filter, if you don"t mind. PM me if it's ok.

1. How many miles have you run with this mixture?
[/ QUOTE ]
I have gone a total of around 4,000 miles Using WVO, but have been experimenting in various concentraions to find out what works best, with no heat. When running low diesel amounts, or even SVO the truck takes longer to startup in the mornings, but I have found that by plugging it in, It will start up normally. The problem I have had with running SVO without heat is that it plugs up the fuel filter after a few hundred miles.

2. What micron filter do you use?

In the truck i use the factory one, but for filtering it at home I have gone through several trial and error setups, starting with a remote fuel filter mount from NAPA, to my current setup that uses a large air filter and is detailed in a post on here titled " My home WVO filtering setup.

3. Do you remove any water first or just filter and pour?

There really is verry little to no water in the oil I collect. usually the water is introduced when people "wash" the oil to help clean very dirty oil. So yes, I do just filter and pour.
Any ohter questions, please ask.
