A while back I mentioned that my truck has suffered from rough starts, even thought the outside temps have been as high as 60*. It was better when I plugged in the heater but even then I'd have to idle 15 minutes or so to warm up the engine. Otherwise, the truck stumbled, stuttered and limped along at 15 mph.
I feared my Pollak 6-port valve was allowing some WVO in with the diesel at startup.
I removed the Pollak and eliminated any WVO from the system. Guess what? Still started rough... really rough.
At a local garage, they ran the codes... cam position sensor. I'd always heard the CPS failure was a start/no start thing. So, $324 later and with morning temps of 38* it started right up.
Everybody here at thedieselstop.com has talked about having a spare CPS in the glovebox. Now, at least I know where it is located on the engine. Mileage at the time of replacement... 99,680.
I had ordered some Greasecar solenoids so I'll re-install with them in lieu of the Pollak. I've heard enough of Pollak failures that I'd as soon take that out of the loop.

Well, I spoke too soon. Earlier this morning I cranked the truck... no problem. Idles fine. But, it still stumbles, knocks, etc. cold... not even able to get over 2000rpm. As it warmed up, the performance came back.
My WVO system has been completely removed and all the fuel lines are tight so I don't think I have air leaks on the fuel lines. I changed the stock fuel filter element yesterday and there is no leakage around the gasket. Therefore, I doubt it is sucking air at the filter housing cap.
By the way, even after changing the CPS, it still had a bit of a miss at idle. I've noticed this for six months or more. However, the idle is smooth as silk on WVO.
As this is not a WVO related issue, I'm going to post it over on the 7.3 Engine section. In the meantime, any suggestions.

you payed $324 for a CPS??? are you crazy? its takes 5 mins to change it out and the sensor itself is only $180 tops at the ford dealership....otherwiser under $100 at IH.

Not crazy... just stuck at a repair shop. Just yesterday morning I again put "order spare CPS off eBay for less than $85" on my 'to do' list. In the past, I'd only heard of CPS failure as a go/no go failure so I had no idea it was the CPS.
The repair shop connected the truck to their computer and ran the diagnostics to pull the codes. Any low cost ways to pull codes in lieu of going to the repair shop?
They got the CPS from Ford... $189 plus tax. Add right at $100 for labor to diagnose and replace, and our 10% tax... $324. Yeah, it bites big time. Yeah, it takes 5 minutes to replace... but it took a lot more to diagnose.
But, this is the first maintenance expense in 100,000 miles. The only money spent until now has been for oil changes, one brake job and tires. Nothing else has broken in three and a half years.
Again, any cheap code readers? I could've done what they did. Besides, I have the Ford repair manual on CD.

Are you sure it isn't just the EBPV causing a lack of power at startup. Mine wouldn't rev over 2000 any way under the sun when it's cold and the ebpv is closed.
Just a thought.
Isn't the EBPV is the valve that closes the exhaust for cold startup? I've heard that... sounds like a potato shoved in the tailpipe. The engine is more like starving for fuel than a restricted exhaust.
I stopped by a diesel repair shop and asked my buddy out there who in turn called the same injection shop suggested by the first repair shop. The injection specialist suggested changing from Rotella to Ford brand oil as it has an anti-foam additive.
His thinking is the oil is breaking down which affects the ability of the HPOP to generate full injection pressure.
By the way, it did throw a 1211 Code... injector pressure regulator. I have the 18k mod and wondered if that was causing the 1211 code. Any ideas?

And Rotella doesn't? Your injection amateur must have Ford stock, my 7.3 PSD has run a lot of miles on Rotella T 15 w 40 and has no oil related problems. And my big truck with a DI Caterpillar had over a million miles and no major overhaul when I sold it a year ago. That is good enough for me.

Hey Todd HERE is a good place to get your spare CPS. He just about always has them and sometimes you get get them a bit cheaper than the one he has now with the BIN. Ive dealt with him several times with no problem and shipping is fast.
