Does injection timing need changing when running bio-d?

I too am thinking about getting into bio-diesel, because of the climate I am in I think its more practical than a WVO system. I even have an offer from a fellow up in my area to supply me with a tankfull at cost so I can try it out.

However, I have one question, most of the articles I've read say no mod's are needed, especially on >95 or so, earlier ones may need any rubber lines replaced etc.. Except for one article I just stumbled across where they recommend you retard the injection timing a few degrees.

Anyone here running bio-d changed their timing?

Can I run it in my 99 without to much worry?

TIA

Run it straight, no timing adjustments are needed.

Playing with timing on the powerstrokes is a good way to stuff a rod thru the block. Just ask the guys running propane and playing with timing. I think propane advances the timing, and combined with a chip that ALSO advances timing. *BOOM*

Re: Does injection timing need changing when running bio-d?

Go to www.me.iastate.edu/biodiesel and click on the online 'course' page and read all 26 pages (I"m not being facetious).

If I remember right, buried in there is a discussion of timing and biodiesel emissions- basically, changing the timing a little can give you even cleaner emissions with biodiesel than it already has, but if youre going back and forth between bio and regular #2 you don't want to do that as you'll pollute more on regular diesel if you retard the timing.

ALso I defer to experts on your truck- I run an ancient 6.9 and it's fine to change the timing on that, I don't know anything aobut your vehicle!

Basically it'll run absolutely fine with no modifications or timing changes, but if you want to be even 'cleaner' with your exhaust and you're only going to run 100% biodiesel, then you can accomplish this in some cars by retarding (I think) the timing. Most people don't do this.

Re: Does injection timing need changing when running bio-d?

Biodiesel puts out less emissions across the board except for Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx). Retarding the timing creates less combustion pressure and lower heat in the cyclinder - this reduces NOx. The great thing about biodiesel is that it is naturally low in sulphur compounds (which kill lean-NOx catalysts), so if we can ever replace regular diesel with it, manufacturers can design robust emissions equipment and be very very clean.

So, in four words: Don't change a thing.

Re: Does injection timing need changing when running bio-d?

The recommendation in some, not all, cases is to retard timing 1 to 2 degrees. I haven't touched my Benz on this and I run B100 whenever possible.
