donut oil

I have an opportunity to begin collecting WVO that is used in a donut making operation. Is there anything negative about oil from the donut making process? This will be my first experience making bio-diesel. If this oil will not be good for bio-d I will just collect it for future use as a home heating oil.
Thanks for your resonse.

Re: donut oil

Probably no harm in it, but be advised that donut oil is shortening and will solidify at a higher temperature.

Also, if they don't change the donut oil frequently, higher amounts of free fatty acids (FFAs) will form, taking a larger amount of KOH to make biodiesel.

Re: donut oil

i use shortening as well with no problems. once it is in the liquid form it processes the same as oil. You just have to be consious of when the feedstock will solidify. i.e. i collect into open top drums instead of closed tops so that i can get it out without having to heat it. i actually find it easier to store after it has solidified. and also since the feedstock solidifies at a higher temp the fuel produced from it will gell or cloud up at a higher temp. What i make starts getting cloudy at ~45 degrees. I have used Power Services Fuel Supplement (white bottle) to succesfully bring that cloud point down to ~25 degrees useing the standard dossage on the bottle (one bottle (small) to 100 gallons)

Re: donut oil

The doughnut oil that we use at the bakery I work at has a high FFA count when we get rid of it(about an 800FFA). The reson why is most doughnuts dont taste right till the FFA is over 600. The they dump some old oil ad new oil to keep the FFA at around 700 or so.I have been told high FFA and Bio dont go well together... Thats why I run straight WVO.

Re: donut oil

You've got it backwards. Running WVO w/ a high FFA is bad for your injectors. The "A" stands for acid, and if you are not precipitating the acids out by transestrification, they get to attack the metals in your injectors. Also, burning S/WVO in a diesel creates acreolin, a known carcinogin.

The transestrification process binds the FFA's and precipitates them out as glycerol. This is biodegradable & non-hazardous.

Re: donut oil

yup and with the high FFA content all you have to do is use more Base which will be determined by a titration sample.

So for us WVO users, what is an "acceptable" FFA level? I happen to have a titration kit lying around here somewhere....

Re: donut oil

Just a guess but I'd think that anything over a 5 would be very acidic for a set of injectors.

Actually, Acrolein is produced from burning glycerin. Not WVO.
