Final/Polishing filter?

Right now I filter to 3 microns using felt PONG filters. I'm wondering if adding a final canister filter is recommended and what type of setup people use. I have a 12V portable gear pump with a pickup line and output line with a nozzle at the end. I've thought of adding some sort of in-line canister filter right before the nozzle. Any recommendations for a polish filter? Goldenrod? Get a filter adapter from NAPA and use spin ons?

Re: Final/Polishing filter?

I run everything going into the truck through a final Goldenrod 10 micron filter. This is just to catch anything that might have gotten into the lines as I disconnect and reconnect them. However, it is only a 10 micron. I am not aware of one finer than that.

Here's a tip just from yesterday. I have a 100' 3/8" pressure washer hose going from my veggie area in the shop out to where I fill my truck. I also use 3/8" quick couplers on everything. Before connecting the Goldenrod, I pump a couple of gallons into a bucket. This way, any trash is caught there rather than my Goldenrod. I put that gallon back into my filtration system so it gets used eventually. This is just a way to prolong the life of your in-line filter.

In my 'filtration station' the oil is heated and gravity fed through a series of filters down to 5 micron. At 90 degrees, the 5 micron will get really slow. Bump it to 95 and it is better but some of the bag filters can overflow. At 100 to 105 degrees, the flow rate is great. However, I added a 1 micron bag filter and even at 95 degrees liquid temp, it wouldn't flow at any thing like a good rate.

What is a PONG filter? I've never seen a 3 micron bag and find the jump from 5 down to 1 a bit much.

Re: Final/Polishing filter?

I know that Gulf Coast Filters have a fuel polishing system that uses Bounty paper towels as the filter medium to filter the fuel down to an amazing amount.

I was thinking about using such a system for my larger scale fuel processing station. I'm accumulating parts for the system now.

Re: Final/Polishing filter?

The PONG filters are polypropylene felt bags meant to be housed in an X100 filtration canister.

Like this setup here:
http://www.filterbag.com/biodiesel.html

Regarding the Goldenrod filters.. are these the standard looking spin on filters or the large ones with the clear bowl. Looks like the smaller canister ones would be more manageble.

So far I've filtered a small amount to 3 microns but it still looks cloudy.. probably suspended water. I'm going to see if I can heat and settle before I send it through the 3 micron filter.

25 gallons heated to 140*f through 5 micron, dry in 1.5 hours!
Heat is the ticket.
Let settle just in case and use/store.
Golden rod makes both, spin on and canister.

Re: Final/Polishing filter?

I am also using a 12v pump (from northern) to transfer from my (5 micron bag filtered) filtered oil drum to the car. Yesterday I put a goldenrod in line just after the pump and it seemed to put a really heavy load on the pump. Just putting about 15gal in my Mercedes took 10 minutes and I felt like I had to stop once to let the pump cool.
I am going to take this filter back off until I can get my 110V pump set up.

Re: Final/Polishing filter?

I used to have the 12V Northern Tool pump.. but I returned it since it blew two fuses after a couple minutes of pumping. Just not meant for higher viscosities. I ended up getting a 12V pump from Fill-Rite meant to transfer oils but with portability.

To angst: Before you added the Goldenrod were you just pumping to your tank after filtering to 5 microns and dewatering?

Re: Final/Polishing filter?

I use a 10 micron Goldenrod water block spin on filter in series with a 5 micron Whirlpool whole house water filter. I transfer from my drying tank to a 30 gal. poly dum using a carbonator pump (5 gpm). The Bio goes trough both filters when pumping it to the 30 gal drum. I use a barrel pump on the 30 gal drum to fill up my truck. On the output from the pump I put another 10 micron spin on filter.

Re: Final/Polishing filter?

Rich, Yes I cold filter through a 5 micron sock from mcmaster.com into a barrel. I pump out of barrel with the northern pump threaded into a port that I welded into the drum about 6" off the bottom.
Mind you this oil is going into my indirect injection Mercedes. I have not put this oil in my Ford. I have some concerns about the 5 micron cutting the mustard. Every time I end up transfering my filtered oil into any other semi-temporary storage container there will be a little ulra fine dark colored sediment on the bottom. That is why I added the goldenrod to my transfer.
