I found a place that sells Canola veggie oil, 16 liter pail, CDN$17, that translate to US$3.29 per Gal, still cheaper than diesel here which is averaging US$3.64 per Gal. My questions are:
1) How much of this oil can I add to the diesel fuel without hurting the engine?
2) Should I be getting better mileage by adding this oil? (I am averaging 18 mpg in mixed city/hwy, feather footed driving now)
3) Any long term effects (good or bad) burning Canola oil?
Please tell me your experiencesssss.....Thanks
BTW, after studying "how to Biodiesel" I have no plan to do it due to limited space. I can not get WVO locally either, being bought up buy some local company.
You can add up to 70% in warm weather, reduce in cold weather as testing indicates.
The canola probably won't give better mileage in higher concentrations, but exhaust should smell better and emissions with a hot engine reportedly are lower. Also engine will be quieter, and the increased lubricity is good for the injectors as long as viscosity increase doesn't create a problem.
Depending on your vehicle and driving habits, long term effects could vary from none, to increased filter changes, to possible injector coking or IP failure. Most who run blends have no problems.
Let me guess, it's probably Laidlaw who picks up all the grease around the greater Van area.
I heard they have mob connections which wouldnt surprise me. I've got alot of family on the mainland and on the island too.
I havent heard how well biodiesel is taking off up in BC but I'm sure it's gaining momentum.
That would be sweet if I could make biodiesel out of new canola oil. While the WVO that I'm using is of high quality, fresh oil would make even better bioD.
PM me if you have more questions about biodiesel.

On one of these sites I read about acidity levels in different types of Veg Oil. There are some oils that are very bad like corn, to acidic. Virgin oil is always better the best I’ve read is virgin soy. I don't use alternative fuel because Ford only recommends a 20% ratio and here I can only get straight Biodiesel.

Fill tank with 80% #2 and then top off with B100, would that not be 20%?

Thanks for the info, I dump 16 liters of this canola oil into full tank of diesel, roughly 100 liter of diesel, so a little over 4%. After driving for about 10 miles, the engine sounds noticeably quieter(my truck is very quiet to start with). On the free way, I can only hear a slight hum of the exhaust, even with window half down. Didn't notice any diff in mileage yet. Have not had time to go sniff the exhaust for french fries flavor either. I'll be back for some more updates after a few tanks, maybe should increase ratio to 20% or more. BTW, it was 56º F early this morning and this canola stuff seems to pour easy at that temp.
Wvo has a lot less vegi gums than fresh. Where do these gums usually deposit? On the hottest parts of the fryers it passes through. It forms a browninsh sticky substance. Where else does this brownish sticky substance shown up? The inlet valves of diesels run on virgin oil.How does one remove the gums left by the oilseed extraction process?
Well, that's a whole other discussion...

Too acidic? can you please clarify that?

I have an 03 Jetta and VW doesn't recommend any type of alternative fuel, yet, it runs just fine on WVO...
No manufacture is going to recommend this because there are no quality standards. Your talking about people making there own fuel, there isn't a warranty company in the world that's goin to write a claim on home brew.
I have ran virgin soy oil, sunflower oil, corn oil,and canola oil. So far I have ran about 30,000 miles on them plus a mixed . I am now running used soy/corn oil mix(cause where I work we throw 5600# about 750 gal away at a time no chance to seperate it) and I have had no problems. I have ran a 100% veg oil using the virin oils and also ran 100% mixed oil. The corn oil sets up at 90deg but, once it has been cooked sets up at a lower temp(at this time I dont know where at) So far I have had no problems I do how ever run a tank of straight dino about every 10 tanks to help take care of coking(sp) if any. Hope this helps if any questions IM me

Some types of vegetable oil have a high enough level of acid that it can pit the metal in the engine. I understand that the European vehicle manufactures have built their vehicles expecting 20% Biodiesel.

WVO, veggy oil but what about peanut oil? Does anyone use peanut oil100% or mixed?
[/ QUOTE ]
I've ran heated 100% peanut oil on occasion, both virgin and used. I like it, smells better, runs fine, but not as easy to get due to cost. I have friends and people doing neighborhood block partys who save theirs for me at holidays.

Wow, that's great! Just goes to show ya that what you read doesn't always apply in real life applications.
Fozzybear, so what do you do that allows you to get so much virgin oil?
