Rudolf Diesel's prime model, a single 10 ft (3 m) iron cylinder with a flywheel at its base, ran on its own power for the first time in Augsburg, Germany, on August 10, 1893. In remembrance of this event, August 10 has been declared "International Biodiesel Day"

Probably from breathing in diesel fumes while drinking beer.

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Well there ya go. The germans didn't want Diesel to give the technology to the English to use in the subs. May have been a suicide by why. He was a millionair, just invented a new engine to change the world, had plans to help everyone then just jumps off a boat?
None of his friends did it because they all made sure Rudolph's engine became what it should be and they made sure it kept his name. Unless of course he just had weird friends on the boat with him.
The Germans didn't murder him. The French did. Dr. Diesel was instrumental in putting his engines into the French sub fleet. Before WWI, the French had the largest sub fleet in the world.
It was the Imperial German Navy that really capitalized on the use of the U-Boote for commerce raiding and interdiction of supplies. They weren't about to shoot the goose that laid the golden egg as it were.
Also Dr. Diesel had huge credit problems at the time of his death. It's said that with that and the combination of the migraines that he suffered lead to his 'suicide'.
Dr. Diesel was on his way across the English Channel to talk with the Royal Navy about the dieselization of their sub fleet that up to WWI were powered by petrol engines of all things.
Before WWII, the US Navy tacitly supported the dieselization of the railways in the US so that a proven large, high speed diesel engine would be ready for use in their upcoming diesel fleet submarines. Detroit, Fairbanks Morse and others powered the Gato, Balao and other sub classes all from railroad engine designs.
