Heating 50/50 WVO/D2

I've been giving my dad some WVO to try. We've been putting in his 150 gal. in bed tank which we've been mixing 50/50 with D2. Now that temps are in the 20's he wants to try and heat it with a 110vac. "dip stick" heater. He has a large inverter in his truck that will power the heater. I'm not sure if the heater will have enough power to make a differance in 150 gal of fuel. but what concerns me, is would there be a any chance of fire heating the 50/50 mix with this type of heater. I plugged the heater in tonight and I would say in a matter of 20 seconds you could not touch the end of it with your bare hand. I'm just not sure if I trust that "heater". Thanks in advance. Gruss

Re: Heating 50/50 WVO/D2

Well a plugged in hot water heater element not submerged is ingrediants for disaster.

I stuck a 300w aquarium heater in my fuel tank just for prevention of overnight freezing near the pickup tube. It's marketed to be one of the safest on the market with features to shut itself down if not submerged, drop tested at 5' for shock, etc.

Your dad can perhaps try a heated fuel filter for what he's doing if the dipstick doesn't work out.

Aric:

What kind of problems are you having with your stroke?

Thanks.

Re: Heating 50/50 WVO/D2

I think you just need to heat and check your fuel filter.

I am running an inline water separater, with a heater on it. Then a tank heater to get things warmed up in the tank.

When it starts getting cold outside, the WVO will clog things up if it isn't warmed up.

Re: Heating 50/50 WVO/D2

keep in mind this is not a blend but i think it may put minds at ease...i heated 50 gallons of Vo with the above mentioned water tank element in an elevated drum and proceeded to drain it into my sock filters in the lower drum. the element is mounted vertically from the bottom...i neglected to unplug it and drained enough oil to expose the top 2 or 3 inches of the element. i smelled a burnt oil smell and figured out what i did after about 5 minutes so the element was ON and above oil level for at least that long. i unplugged it, changed my undies and inspected the element. the oil had carbonized and left a crusty residue on the element that i scraped off with my fingernail. just thought i would mention it to all u guys who are worried about blowing up your garages with a mistake like this. dana, no offense to you, but i think you are overly cautious about the chance of igniting VO. i am a risk taker and obviously throw caution to the wind too often (i crashed on my motorcycle at 110 MPH the other day) and may one day post about a wicked fire in my garage, but for now all is well. lol-Nick
