Heating suggestions? Nomad users?

I am rigging up a 60 gallon alum. tank with a 1.5" coolant chamber beneath it (like Greasel's Nomad system) and running the 203 degree thermostat with Evans NGC coolant. I bought a regular DOT certified tank and don't want to cut into the tank itself. Therefore, I can't add a heating coil inside. That is a last ditch effort for now.

Nomad owners, how long does it take to warm up the entire tank? I feel I'll need supplemental heating and am considering the Vormax or Dahl as well as running coolant lines adjacent to the fuel lines.

How can we add a temp gauge to the fuel line? I want to know the temp at the tank as well as on the fuel line prior to the 6 port solenoid valve.

What is the gallons per minute (or hour) of the stock fuel system? I understand it sends much more than is used with the remainder returned to the tank. If I plumb the veggie return back into the fuel loop as Greasel does, this will help build more and more heat and filter it better and better. But, I want to make sure it gets warm enough in the first place. Ideas?

I'm probably going to use a Holley blue fuel pump on the veggie line and placing the fuel selector valve just before the stock fuel pump. That won't leave much distance for the hose on hose heating, though.
Again... suggestions?

Now that I have my tank I'm ready to start doing the plumbing and ordering valves, etc.
Thanks in advance.

Todd
Didnt you just get one of the tanks from Northern? Which one? The one with the offset box and the bung for a transfer pump? Did you also get the kit with the valve and sending unit for the guage?
Sorry about all the ?'s I know they dont help you but I have been looking at their tanks and would like the 41 gallon size. How much additional Evans do you think you will need to fill a 1.5"x57"x20" chamber plus the hoses?

Re: Heating suggestions? Nomad users?

I got the 60 gallon tank with the tool box on top- 57" wide, 20" front to back, 20" overall tall (including 6" for tool box). It is pretty well rectangular, no offset. Yesterday I picked the tank up from the welder's shop. He added an alum. coolant chamber on the bottom... 1.5", 45" wide to allow for the curvature of the truck bed. He made the coolant chamber with two sides connected by a internal baffle. That way the hot coolant has to go all the way down one side and back the other for even heating.

$586 for the tank/toolbox (including freight) plus $112 to add the coolant chamber on the bottom.

Re: Heating suggestions? Nomad users?

Hey Todd!

The system usually takes anywhere from 4 to 12 minutes to warm up depending on the outside temp. I usually drive around for about 1/2 hour or more in cold weather to warm up the unfiltered veggie side before filtering (I schedule this in with my longer drives).

I understand your point about wanting to get more information about the fuel flow and extend the heating area as much as possible. I'm not sure where you can get this information...

Consider however that the engine does a lot of the fuel heating for you. One of the reasons that the 7.3 L PSD is ideal for wvo is the location and design of the stock fuel filter. Try sticking a candy thermometer into the filter bowl after driving for a little while. Then remember that the fuel will be fed through the heads before injection.

If you aren't going to be doing on board filtration ala Nomad, you can probably relax some about tank heating. Your purpose is to get the viscocity down enough to allow the fuel flow into the 3bp hose. From there, the coolant loop will provide plenty of heat.

Keep us posted on your continued progress.

With best regards,
