I tried something a little different, and it work pretty well (for unloading off the back of a pickup).
I got 2 2x8 (x 8 feet or so). Got the barrel sitting (laid down) in the crack between the bed and tailgate so it wouldnt move. Stuck the boards under the barrel. Rolled the barrel onto the boards, and as the barrel was rolled of the edge off the tailgate (slowly) the boards moved down to the ground. Then you can ease it down, or let 'er roll. I can get a full 55 drum off my pickup by myself this way. It is a little exciting though.

The tire method works good. Just get the barrell centered on the tire and let her fly, we used to do it all the time at the Cenex station I worked at. 2 or 3 tires high works good and the some big Ol Hoosiers even work better. The first time I saw this I stood back about 20 ft. after that it was like 2nd nature. JUST DON'T USE A TIRE WITH A RIM IN IT, PLEASE.
Another method I've seen is an electric winch attached to a hook in the ceiling, a 2" tow strap wrapped around the barrell and hooked to the winch, with the barrell standing up in the back of a pickup. Pull up the barrell and pull the truck out and lower the barrell.

Yep, the tire method has worked well for me for years.
I had to do a double take on this statement though:

The tire cushion method is just plain scary!

I agree! Got a skinned up knee right now from loosing control of a barrel on a handtruck when taking it down the ramp of my snowmobile trailer. Started out a little fast as I had to go over the gap at the door hinge line, really need a hand truck with bigger tires.

When he told me how we could unload the barrel using the tire method, I have to admit I thought it was dangerous and kinda scared of the what if's. But after watching him do it. He did it by himself even. I was impressed at how easy and safe it looked. Barrel really didn't do anything funny.
Tire with NO rim.
Pumping out a 55 gallon drum of methanol to another drum with my hand pump is not my idea of fun. I know it really wouldn't take that long. But the guy bringing me the methanol probably wouldn't wait. I do however pump the wvo from barrel to barrel while on a pickup. Not by hand pump. If we take the truck to collect oil, it has a liftgate. Makes it nice.
