I'm interested in seeing how other people gather their oil. I have a 12v transfer pump that i've been using and the sucker finally died tonight. It actually shot my discharge hose off the end of the pump head and i was covered in oil, front of the truck too.... Not kewl.

I'm talking about sucking it out of the large vats. I've been pumping it out, but its hard on my pump. I'm thinking about getting a barrel pump and using that... Oh btw, if anyone is using an electric pump like me, heres a tip. Take a stick or broom handle, and ziptie your hose to it a few inches off the bottom. That way you don't have to worry about sucking the crap off the bottom.

Being exquisitely lucky, I get my oil in the 5 gallon cubees it originally comes in. Downside is that I have an extra can of trash every few weeks but that's no big deal.
im using vacuum from the pump on the truck to suck it through a 1" hose into a converted propane tank that holds about 25 gal mounted in the bed used to recover used engine oil on semi trucks. then i pressureize it into a 55 gal drum i can move around . i maso using propane tanks for storage at the house and use pressure there . donr use any pumps at all in the process just air and vaccum to handle the oil and you can regulate the pressure down to about 3 lbs for a real low pressure filter system .

Aye this sounds very interesting!!! Would make my life easier. As i just went and bought a hand pump today to suck oil out of the vats... Arm hurts now... 10 gpm, and a 55 gal barrel... OWWW

both of my trucks are used for service trucks on over the road tractors . i have propane tanks mounted in one of them . its the one about 4'tall holds about 27 galons total but i stop at about 24 for evpansion room . i removed the valve in the top and took a 3/4 pipe hydraulic fitting and threaded the inside to 1/2 pipe and use it for a draw tube . i welded a 1/4 pipe fitting on the top of the tank and drilled a hole in it . installed a check valve and a guage and ran a line to the vaccum pump on the engine . when im driving around it puts a vacuum on the tank , iv seen it as low as 22" and that sucks (lots of oil) i do have a valve on the draw pipe and im using hyd hose for the suction hose . when i get to the house i cut off the vacuum and pressurize the tank with air and blow the oil out into the setteling tank . the places i pick oil up from around here use 55 gal drums . i draw off of the top and lower the hose as it pickes it up . watching for the crud in the bottom and stop when i see it ,dont even have a screen on the end of the hose .

Why not just buy an electric fuel pump at Napa for $20, and wire it to a trailer plug to pick up 12v? That's my plan for now. Fuel pumps are pretty cheap.

well when i built the setup it was to be to handle waste engine oil for semi trucks and when i started veggy it just made sence to use the same system and if you already got the parts layin around why not and then i aint got to mess with an pump layin around and leakin oil all over the place

Don't misunderstand...I think you have the hot setup!...no question.
But for guys that don't, rather than standing there and cranking on a hand-crank, hook up a small electric and go to town. I bet you could even use one of the pond pumps at Home Despot to do the job. Remember, it's veggie oil, not gas.

Lobstah, i origionally had a 12V transfer pump for chemicals to pump my oil. But it finally burned up. Its hard on the pump to try and drag the oil out of the tank with just an impeller... The vacuum idea sounds really neat!!! I want some more info on that. Like i said before i'm using a high volume hand crank just because its RELIABLE. The electric pump would scream until the oil got dragged up in it... ONe easier thing to do was to suck the oil up with a hand pump till it reached the electric pump and it would be much easier on it. But whats the point of even using the electric pump then?
