I got some WVO, and I now have a question.......

I did a little patrionizing at a local mexican joint, and talked my way into them telling me where they keep their oil...(oh yeah...)

Anyway, I get back there, and I take off a lid, and the smell is crippling. It stinks BAD. It has a load of floaties on top, they kinda look like styrafoam. I opened another drum, and found oil, that didnt stink so bad, and thats what I took. Is the stinky oil good for use? I didnt even want to touch it. It was real bad. But under that top layer was oil. I couldnt tell too much, b/c it was pretty dark.

They change their oil weekly, and I dont know what kind it was.

But I nearly 'd

Re: I got some WVO, and I now have a question.......

Hey there Manny -
Now you're really getting into the program - I love this. This is the part when you find out how much you love making your own awesome fuel and how much staying power you've got. That's why the end of my few posts say, if your in this for price per gallon alone, that won't keep you going from tank to tank.

NOW - The white floaties on top at a mexican food joint are from the masa(corn meal). Comes from making lots of tortilla chips and things like taquitos and chile rellenos. Don't worry about filtering those - they fall out in drainng of glycerin layer. I didn't want to get to funky either so I bought one of those rotary pumps with an intake hose that I toss into the grease trap or whatever they're dumping in - and the output hose which obviously goes in my collection barrel. About 20 gallons per 100 cranks. Much easier than dumpster diving. Plus - you just got to get your wife/girlfriend involved in the collection thing so they can really appreciate what your doing. Then, get yourself a window screen from a house to pour your collected grease through on its way into your reaction tank. You're doing great! Once the restaurant sees how reliable you can be, then you can find out what day and time of the week they're draining the fryers so you can get it super fresh. The biggest thing to watch out for in grease trap oil is it usually has water in it which will mess your reaction up big-time if you don't boil it dry.

Re: I got some WVO, and I now have a question.......

Thanks for the words of advice...

They change their oil on fridays. Ill have to go back then.

Where did you get your rotary pump? I lucked out by finding a drum with about 8g in the bottom, and it was pourable. I would have been screwed if I only found the full one....

I may try other places. I have found where most of them keep their oil. Just next to the dumpster. Ill just snoop around on the weekends and see what I can get. It is a lot easier than having to buy food there first......

Thanks! I intend to keep on with it...
