This was posted up on the 97's till i saw this fuel forum
Should i be concerned with using it. I treat it with additive to lube it. It's free so i gave it a try. A couple of freind's have been useing it for over a year with no problems. What else can i use to treat it so it has more or less lube? currently useing stanadine, someone recomended ATF.
what do you think?
Thanks,
Brian

the burn characteristics are unknown, plus, who knows what pollutants it is creating also. Ford SPECIFICALLY states not to add oils such as ATF to the fuel.
ATF was an old IDI/non turbo trick used on older diesels. The newer electronic controlled diesels with the "unit injector" your not supposed to do that. Lubricity is a good thing. But get it from Bio-D or true "FUEL ADDITIVES" not hydralic oil, atf or engine oil.
Here is a bit of info on aviation fuels. Jet A and JP-8 are both kerosene style fuels but differ in additive packages. I have no idea how it compares to plain old diesel fuel though I can tell you JP-8 and Jet A sure smell different from Flying J diesel.

I work on an Air National Guard Base and all our diesel equipment uses JP-8 all the time (on road and off road). It compares closely to #1 Diesel and will not jell at any temp that could be encountered on the surface of Earth. I have spoken to our Vehicle Maint Manager and he tells me that adding a lubricant is helpful for prolonging injection pumps.

With Jp-8 you have to adjust the timing. The first 2 or 3 tanks you will probably need to replace fuel filter, because it cleans out the system. I know we went from Ft sill to Ft hood with a humvee with the old 6.2. We had to stop and get regular diesel man it ran like crap.

We have cummins in out aircraft tow tractors and all they run is JP 8. Don’t seem to have any problems but then they don’t get many miles put on them either. JP4 is basically JetA. JP5 is used on board ships because it has a higher flash point i.e. lower fire danger and JP 8 is primarily used by the USAF and most military shore bases. JP8 will not jell in cold weather/high altitude applications.
