in-line fuel filter

hey folks, anybody have any experience installing an in-line fuel filter on their powerstroke? i'm running biodiesel and want to protect the fuel pump by placing a racor filter between it and the tank. problem is, I can't figure out what to do with those metal fuel lines which need to become a 3/4" threaded fitting at the filter. i have a 1996 E-350 van. Let me know if the Van forum would be a better for this. thanks, dylan

Re: in-line fuel filter

Well the fuel lines would need to be cut to add fittings to adapt to the size you want to end up with on the new filter.

The fuel lines should be -5
If the new filter is 3/4 NPT then you need to adapt it down to -5

You need to visit a local hyd. shop and tell them what you have and what you want to end up with. They can get you there.

Re: in-line fuel filter

Look at McMaster-Carr.com You should be able to find your fittings there.

Re: in-line fuel filter

I have the same van (96 E350 PS). The easiest place to put an in-line filter would be just forward of the tank inside the frame. Just cut the steel supply line and hose clamp a 3/8 fuel hose onto it. The lines are labeled with a tag (it is loose so it could be anywhere up and down the line) so you can tell which is supply vs return.

There is a screen in the tank that is supposed to catch anything that could harm the pump. However, mine was in pieces when I took it out so don't count on it doing it's job.

Re: in-line fuel filter

hey, thanks for the advice. i've thought about running svo, but have been scared about the high injection pressures. sounds like you've had some success. dylan
