Lye/NaOH

I've been going to various places looking for Sodium Hydroxide to make a "Doctor Pepper" Batch. The Heet was no problem, but all I'm finding for NaOH is the Liquid stuff.

On downloading the MSDS for the jug I found, it is 15-25% NaOH by volume. This means to me it is mainly something else. Like water.

Just a wild guess; This isn't what I want.

I've been to several Farm stores and department stores. Any tips?

Re: Lye/NaOH

I got my first few small bottles from Lowes. they have it in the drain cleaners. It is Red Devil Lye and the bottle looks like this http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(cmj2wr...;Source=froogle It is 99.9% granule. very easy to use and measure.

Re: Lye/NaOH

The only pure NaOH that's left is called Roebic. Home Depot or Lowe's should have it.

Red Devil changed their formulation to keep the meth cookers from using it.

I wholely recommend that you get KOH (potassium hydroxide), your test batches will go so quickly, you'll see the transesterfication happen in about 10 minutes.

I looked at this site and at the bottom where it says it is no longer available, I clicked the replacement, they said it was 100% lye. It was a lot cheaper than the Red Devil. Little over $2 a can. Not bad!

Re: Lye/NaOH

I found a great place to buy it, but it's a long way from TN.

This place does "Candle and Soap making Supplies"

If you can find a place like that local, they might carry it.

Price @ $1.00/lb

Re: Lye/NaOH

You can buy KOH online at www.braintan.com

They are very good about shipping. Also if there is a bulk chemical supply store in your area, you can purchase 50 pound sacks of KOH for about 50 bucks.

Buy a couple of sealable paint cans, divide the 50 pounds between them and seal the lid.
