Methanol

What is the difference between methanol and methyl hydrate? From what I can find through google they seem the same. Here in Canada a 55 gallon drum of methanol ranges from $350 to almost $800. Methyl hydrate can be bought cheaper and easier and is 99.9%.

They are the same thing, the only thing I would be careful of is the purity of the methyl hydrate. Your post says that it's 99.9% so it shouldn't be a problem.

The methanol has to be 99% purity, there can't be any water mixed in there or it will throw off the transesterfication.

I wonder why they are selling it for a different price since it's the same thing as methanol?

that does seem weird. Maybe some of the methanol you are being priced for has upper end lubricant for race engines and such. Here is a complete list of synonyms for methanol:
