Re: micron rating of a coffee filter and stock filter?

Couldnt find anything specifically referencing a paper coffee filter, but from what I can tell, 10-20 microns would be the range.

You can purchase industrial coffee and water filters that are rated at anything from 1 to 10 microns, with 5 being pretty common (google searches).

To give you some basis of how big a micron is, the average human hair is 70 microns, and the average person can visually see an object only 40 microns across. (again, more google searches).

Since we worry about objects as small as 5 microns going thru our injectors, that tells you how delicate they are!

Re: micron rating of a coffee filter and stock filter?

IIRC, the stock filter for a 6.9 or 7.3 liter IDI is 12 microns.
The CAT High Efficiency filters remove over 98% of all particles 2 microns or larger.
The CAT 1R-0750 filter for the 3116/3304/3306/3204/3208 engines retails for less than $11.00 at the local CAT dealer.
The FRAM filter for my 7.3 IDI is around $27.00 at Checker.
I'm seriously considering converting my IDI over to the CAT filter.

Re: micron rating of a coffee filter and stock filter?

Dave -
Please tell me more about this CAT filter and how big a deal the conversion would be. Do they make a drop in filter for my 2000 Excursion? I like the sound of that 2 micron filter.

Re: micron rating of a coffee filter and stock filter?

Here is the inside story on CAT filters.
Here's the story on their High Efficiency Fuel Filters.
I don't believe they make fuel filters for other manufacturers' engines. You'd have to buy the CAT filter header and plumb it into your engine's fuel system. Or make your own filter header, assuming you're "good with tools".
