My Fass Veg Oil Pump & Racor Filter Install

I thought some others here might benefit from a recent PM I sent to a member concerning my install of a VEGETABLE OIL SPECIFIC FASS pump assy & a NAUTILUS RACOR fuel filter element assy. Some may be inquiring about Fass pumps & other filtration setups when using veg oil for fuel...

"Ok, let me explain my setup in a little better/precise detail.

First, I have eliminated the factory(oem) 'lift' pump assembly, which also included the factory 'primary'(first) fuel/water seperator filter.

Note, if your van doesn't have a 6.0liter diesel, then you dont have this filter. My oem lift pump/fuel filter assy is mounted roughly in the same location as yours is. I have left this factory pump assy in place & basically bypassed it.(you could say its there as a backup/emergency )

Now, concerning the fuel return line connections at the factory lift pump, I have fabricated a same size 5/16" stainless 'tube' to connect the 'RETURN' fuel lines, one that comes from the engine & connecting to the other that goes back to the fuel tank. I also fabricated another same size 3/8" fuel 'tube' to connect the fuel 'FEED' line that I had disconnected/bypassed from the oem lift pump assy, the one that comes from the engine & now connecting to a NEW rubber fuel hose (3/8" ID) that connects to the new Fass lift pump assembly.

Are you with me? In otherwords, I didnt have to run all new fuel feed & return lines...(less work, really) I capped off the fuel feed & return ports on the factory lift pump to keep contaminates out! Also, I capped the oem fuel feed hose going TO the factory lift pump from the fuel tank. As I stated, I ran a NEW fuel feed hose at that point of the fabricated tube, to the new Fass pump outlet side.

Concerning the Racor filter assy, like I stated, I mounted it using a fabricated piece of 3/16" aluminum plate, to the bed frame, in front of drivers side rear wheel well. Yes, if you stand back some from my truck, you can see the bottom of the Racor filter, as there was no getting around this. The filter MUST be located on the SUCTION side of the FASS pump assy! You mentioned of not using a filter before the Fass pump? No way, I would always have some type of filtration in front of pump!

As for the Fass pump, it is mounted directly in front of the Racor filter, to the bed frame as well. I purchased the mounting bracket assy made specifically for the Fass pump from Vulcan Performance as well.

I dropped my truck's factory PLASTIC fuel tank. I then located, drilled & mounted the new 5/8" fuel pickup tube assy. I then ran from the outlet side of the new fuel tank pickup tube, 1/2" rubber fuel hose & fittings to the Racor INLET & OUTLET to the Fass INLET. Now, from the OUTLET side of the Fass unit, I ran 3/8" fitting & rubber hose to the fabricated feed tube I indicated earlier. I used a 3/8" push lock fitting to connect to the fabricated tube.

So, basically to recap, here is how the new fuel Fass lift pump & Racor fuel feed hose routing and sizes go:

From the tank: 5/8"ID draw tube, down to 1/2"ID outlet. From there, 1/2" rubber hose to 1/2" ID inlet side of Racor filter. Out of Racor filter 1/2" ID rubber hose to 1/2"ID inlet side of Fass pump. Out of Fass pump 3/8"ID rubber hose to fabricated 3/8" feed tube, which is connected to the oem fuel feed hose going to the engine.

The factory fuel return line 5/16"ID is still utilised as I mentioned above, using the fabricated tube alongside the disconnected/bypassed oem lift pump.

As for the electrical side, I used the power plug that originally connected to the oem lift pump assy. This power feed now runs to a relay assy that I purchased from Vulcan Performance, & I mounted in the engine compartment, behind the drivers side battery. This oem 'feed' is used to 'excite/activate' the relay assy, which you also connect to the battery & ground circuit as well. The relay in essence, transfers power from the battery to the Fass pump, when the ignition switch is turned on. In otherwords, you have to run a new section of primary wire from the new relay to the Fass pump to power it up as well as required positive & negative wiring to relay assy.

Very simple, really! It is HIGHLY recommended to incorporate a relay assy to handle the higher amp draw the Fass pump calls for, as compared to the oem lift pump amp draw.

Whew, thats an aweful lot, but not really, if you take your time and think it out!

Hope this helps some,

Regards, Lenny"

so why did you stop running it through the oem fuel system? you were one of the few to run veg on the stock system...

One of the reasons is because of the performance mods listed below. The OEM lift pump was marginal to begin with.

Another reason is due to the fact that the 'cold' blend veg mix I run is slightly thicker fuel than straight #2 furthering load of oem lift pump. Does the oem pump work with a cold blend veg mix? ABSOLUTELY... I ran the oem setup with cold blended veg oil for over 2 years on two different 6.0's! I had one lift pump failure at 30,000 miles due to MY NEGLIGENCE in waiting to replace restricted fuel filters! But the reality is,there is no comparison between the oem & Fass pump!

Also, replacing the Racor element is a hellofalot easier(getting to) compared to the oem HFCM filter!!

EVERY month I use to have to replace RELIGIOUSLY the oem lift pump filter due to accelerated restrictiveness from the cold blend fuel as Ive stated in previous threads, but with this Nautilus Racor filter I have yet to have even a 'hint' of need to replace the element, even after 3 months now!!!

Just a word of warning DPP/FASS recommends a prepump filter no more restrictive than 150 microns. Put your low micron on the pressure side.

Thanks, Ill make note of it. As for 'low' micron, I have retained the final 2 micron oem filter at the engine.

Which Racor are you using as a pre-filter to the FASS? Where did you buy it?

...Racor "Nautilus 6401N". It is a 'BIG', long filter assy(16.5" long, 6" wide and 6" deep). It is dual heated(engine coolant & electric element in bowl) I have been using a 30 micron element with this filter, but decided to go with the 200 micron 'water stripping' element instead. I understand the Fass pump should not be 'pre'-filtered greater than 150 micron. The final filter at the engine is the factory 2 micron.

... I purchased this filter from one of my marine wholesalers, who purchased the Racor direct from Parker(Racor). Parker 'builds' this particular filter assy as they are ordered. Takes about 2 weeks before you get it.

...I am extremely pleased with this unit and feel it is WELL WORTH IT!!

I'm interested in this 200 micron screen. I'm currently using a Fleetguard model that I think is 100 micron. Is the Racor a 1"-14 thread filter element? If so, what is the number and price?

The 200 micron Racor filter is indeed "1-14 center thread. It is Racor part# S6464 Coalescer element. Check the internet on pricing.

I was very interested on your info about the racor 200 micron. I am using the filter the FASS uses which is the Fleetguard FS1023. It's 150 micron steel mesh with a water drain and it's $16.00. I did some searching and correct me if I am wrong but the average price I found for the racor S6464 was $70.00. Was I reading these wrong. I did see that Oregon Fuel injection had these on closeout for $40. Man that seems like alot for a 200 micron filter.

...Uh, I just checked with my marine supplier & they show the S6464 element retails @ $94.15 My cost is $66.12, which is still INSANE!! I had no idea, as I havent bought an S6464 element YET! My S6464 element came with the Nautilus filter assy. I had contacted Parker (Racor) just after I ordered the Nautilus filter & inquired about the 30 micron, S3226P element & they sent me a free one as a courtesy because they apparently 'build' and ship the Nautilus Filter assy with an S6464 'water stripping' element, which is a 200 micron.
You know, at that price, I think Ill continue taking my chances with the $26 S3226P/30 micron filter....thats crazy!!! Racor sure is proud of their elements!! I cant imagine they sell hardly any of these filters. I am calling Parker to find out why such high cost...
