My first batch = 86 liters of oil

Tonight, I cooked up 86.5 liters of oil (22.8 gallons), pulled out 500 ml's for a test batch, then added 5 gallons (18.9 liters) of methanol + catalyst (7.0 base KOH + 3.0 ffa titration), 860 grams KOH total. Using this method, I can use the entire 5 gallon tote of methanol, keep my math simple and also keep the biodiesel batch size manageable to put into my truck.

A biodiesel friend walked me through the process a few times at her place, but this was my first batch with my processor and my own oil

It gets better. Wait until you get it washed and dried and you gaze thru that clear jar of fuel. That, my friend, is arrival..

Norman and all,

Yes, I'm looking forward to actual fuel in the truck

My Dr. Pepper test batch is looking great this morning, nice separation with nice dark glycerine layer with Bio on top.

This batch is going to sit a few days, as I have business in Los Angeles this weekend.

Re: My first batch = 86 liters of oil

My unwashed fuel is sparkling clear before washing, drying makes is all the more so.

Like you, I size the amount of oil to use one 5 gallon can of methanol, makes mixing up a batch all the more simple.

Needs more washing...

Well, my bio was drying slowly after 1 week (about 6-8 inches of clarity), so I decided to check the pH of my final wash water at work today. Tap water 7.4, wash water 8.2

I knew from my forum reading that I should test the pH, but I never got around to it until today. I even have a pH test kit in my bio shed that I can use...no excuses.

Back for more washing,

Hugh
