My first test batch failed

I retested 3 times and came up with a titration of 7 over the base 7
Im using Red Devil
It was real hard getting the 1 gram measured out right for the liter of distilled water.
Im thinking that my test KOH/water solution is not right and giving me false info.

HERE IS A PICTURE:

Re: My first test batch failed

Go to your local Dollar Tree store, get a 3 liter bottle of Shasta Root Beer for a buck, enjoy the frothy liquid whilst you make a 3 gram to 3 liter solution. Or some variant of the above.

You either have some really nasty oil, or you do have an issue with the titration. I always check it twice if it is not oil I use regularly and know what to expect, or if I get a reading other than normal for that supply.

AND you are overloading the lye. Base is 5, not 7. Titration over 3 with Lye is for use after a little experience with the better stuff.

Besides all the above, I could not get the picture link to work either.

Re: My first test batch failed

Yep wayyyyyyyy too much NaOH in there. Consider using KOH next time, KOH is much more tolerant of overloading and will not form a hard soap if you use too much.

LOL I thought Red Devil was KOH? This could explain it!

So can anyone confirm this. Is Red Devil NaOH?

Re: My first test batch failed

Red Devil brand drain cleaner is sodium Hydroxide. Chemically known as NaOH.

Re: My first test batch failed

They even sell it on Ebay. Make sure that it is 100%, but even better use KOH (potassium hydroxide). The base amounts will be different with NaOH and KOH.

--Hugh

p.s. a titration ammount of 7grams NaOH is aweful high for bio making.

Re: My first test batch failed

Red Devil is no longer 100% NaOH. In order to keep the methamphetamine cookers from making more they reduced the NaOH content in Red Devil to something like 50%, far below the proper concentration needed for biodiesel manufacture.

If you must use NaOH, look for the brand Roebic, Home Depot and the larger chain hardware stores should have it.

IMO, KOH makes a more consistent product, is far more tolerant of miscalculations on it's use and will stay liquid instead of turning into a hard soap like NaOH will do.
