A few weeks ago I put barrels at 4 local resteraunts. The resteraunt owners had told me it would be OK, and that they would use them. In fact each owner semed to be excited that they could quit paying a company to haul off their old oil. Today I went around to empty my barrels and they had already been pumped out at each of the resteraunts. I had like 6 gal. of oil total when I should have had around 100 gal with what each owner told me that they use. Sorry to hear about your oil being stolen. I had a similar experience with the restaurant that I'm getting oil from. As it turns out, the rendering company that picks up the oil not only drained their container, but mine as well. Since the used oil from this restaurant was really good, I made a deal with the owner to drop the rendering company and I would pick up their used oil in a timely manner. The next time I went to pick up my oil, both barrels were full and the rendering company's container was gone....NO more problems with stolen oil. However, since I'm exclusive I have to be faithful in picking up their oil before the containers are completely full so as not to inconvenience them.

These places usually dump their fryers on a set scheduele, my asian food joint dumps on Thursday and Sunday (every week). Those nights would also be the best days to eat there
Find out what days they are dumping into your barrels and pickup promptly to catch the perp or beat them to it.

p.s. I was bummed last night to find 1.5-2 gallons on extra water in my 5 gallons oil, thats not was I had asked for...gotta talk to them before the next dump.

Had to weld up a top with a square opening and lid. Open the lid, pour the oil in the square opening (and thru a 1/8" screen to trap the odd fry). Don't let the square lid open over 90º so it will close automatically. Then put a lock on the whole thing. So far, 8 months, so good.
I went to pick mine up and found it empty also. I asked the manager if he knew what happened and he told me I got outbid, then asked me how much I was willing to pay for it. It seems the other guy offered him $$ for it. I said no thaks and left. I know the the guy works for a company ( it is a chain restaraunt)and is pocketing the money he gets from it. So here I am 90% ready to go and not enough oil to brew with.

what are they doing with the grease trap stuff if not putting it in your containers? What do I tell them to do with it?

I have a 130 dollar funnel on two of my collection barrels, now you got me worried!
I think I would be inclined to confront the rendering company, what would they do to you if you took thier oil out of one of thier collection bins? Prosecute you, thats what!
Good luck,
Rick H...

I'm going to buy some of these and put on my barrels http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...%3AIT&rd=1
I doubt that it will stop the rendering company if they are who did it however the locals that know that I work in local law enforcement might think twice about taking the oil since it has my name on the barrel.

I make my own lables from the printer. Print what I want on it along with "contents and container belong too".... Just use spray on glue. Spray the container then stick on the label after it dries I coat the outside of the label and it stays protected(mostly).
Cheaper than $18.00

I printed my own on water proof laser printer labels. I bought the labels at Staples and then printed them at work. I am picking up oil tomorrow, so I will find out if the worked or not.

When I first started with the collecting, I dropped a barrel off at a Asian place with permission of the owner. The deal was he'd give me a little, and he'd give the renderer a little. We we're going to see how things go.
Two weeks later (keep in mind I only had two barrels in place at this time); I get a phone call from someone asking if I collect oil, because he saw my number on one of my barrels, I tell him yes, and then it's throw 20 questions at me, to make it short this unknown person says he can't remember where he saw one of my many barrels at. Keep in mind the two places were not in the same city. It'd be one or the other.
I just so happen to be two blocks away from the asian joint and I took a looksy and noticed someone punched a hole in the bottom of my barrel and the phone number on the barrel happens to have the same area code from the phone call I got.
A coincidence? Naaaaaaa...
If you ask me I think it's pathedic; but take my oil and I catch ya in the act, well......

We all have the exact same problem with stolen oil. They will cut off locks and will vandalize our equipment. We are tapping into an industry that pays really well.
The renderers are not at all flexible in their schedules. They work different streets on different days like trash collectors.
I get about 70 gallons a week from one place, so I am picking up three times a week to minimize losses from theft. I am lucky since I spend 20 or so hours a week on the road driving around town and stopping in at a pickup is easy that way.
I narrowed down the losses to monday morning, therefore, now I pick up on Sunday Night after the kitchen shuts down and in the past 6 or so weeks I do not believe that I have lost any oil at this place.
If you allow them to, the renderers will remove the oil from any container located at a facility where they have a dumpster, the trick is to not allow it.
Yes, what is up with all the extra food stuff in the oil? That must be grease trap crap too.
My straight waste oil (corn oil) is dark and clear with a small amount of junk at the bottom. Getting the watery oil mixture (not clear at all) with junk floating on top AND at the bottom is bunk.
Back to the subject of stealing, I know exactly what time of day and which days the dump the fryer, always the same.

Should I ask them to put the stuff in milk jugs and toss it in the dumpster?
