NaoH

I'm new to bio-making and ready to try a small batch. I just bought "Drain Out" crystal clog remover. There appears to be metal flakes in with the crystals. Do these need to be removed prior to mixing with the methanol? Thanks for any help.

Re: NaoH

I don't think that is what you want unless it is 100% NaOH. Go to Lowes and get the Roebic brand drain cleaner.

Re: NaoH

Drano or Red Devil is no longer 100& NaOH due to the methheads using it for methamphetamine production.

I would recommend that you start using KOH instead. It's very tolerant of mistakes (which can occur when you're learning biodiesel, believe me I know) and will not form a hard soap if you do add too much.

Re: NaoH

What are readily available sources of KOH? Also if a soap layer forms does it mean that the process must be redone?

Re: NaoH

Check with local chemical suppliers. Also check Here. You might find something there.

Re: NaoH

At first I was buying my KOH from www.braintan.com, then I found a local supplier here in Seattle called Tarr LLC. They also sell me the methanol I use for making biodiesel.

If soap forms during your wash process, then there is more than likely an incomplete reaction. How much soap are you getting?
