Re: need advise on methanol tank material

I think any would work
I use to race gocarts which ran off of methanol and we bought it in a plain clear jug like the kind viniger comes in. Menthanol is not that corrosive.

Re: need advise on methanol tank material

I would only use plastic that has "HDPE 2" embossed on it. Normally on the bottom somewhere. As for the previous post I like to point out this particular quote from the MSDS report. I think maybe you were lucky for a while.

10. Stability and Reactivity

Stability:
Stable under ordinary conditions of use and storage.
Hazardous Decomposition Products:
May form carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde when heated to decomposition.
Hazardous Polymerization:
Will not occur.
Incompatibilities:
Strong oxidizing agents such as nitrates, perchlorates or sulfuric acid. Will attack some forms of plastics, rubber, and coatings. May react with metallic aluminum and generate hydrogen gas.
Conditions to Avoid:
Heat, flames, ignition sources and incompatibles.

Check out the link below..if it doesn't work search for "methanol msds"

MSDS for Methanol link

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ AND BEWARE OF THE RISKS. It can have serious effects on you and anyone around you.

Re: need advise on methanol tank material

I was using a stainless steel beer keg for a meth/KOH mixing tank.

But what I do is size my biodiesel batches so they require only 5 gallons of methanol per batch. This way I can use a clear plastic carboy for mixing.

The beer keg was just too heavy even for me, and I couldn't tell if all of it was dissolved.

Re: need advise on methanol tank material

I have been using two from here for over a year. Get the heavy weight HDPE with a vent if you order.

Re: need advise on methanol tank material

What do most people use for methoxide mixing tanks? Carboys?
I've seen a few people use those plastic cone bottom tanks on a stand. Is there any advantage to using a cbt for this stage?

See here.
