Next tank is B20 - fuel filter life expectancy?

Hi all,

I've found the local place that sells B20 and next tank I'm going to give it a try. I'm familiar with the fuel-system cleaning properties Biodiesel has, even in B20 format, and this is part of the reason behind trying it.

I have also read that if the fuel system is badly clogged up with gunk, I can expect to replace the fuel filter shortly after making the move. So, my questions are:

- How long / how many tanks is the average?
- What are the symptoms of a clogged filter? Will it just not run? Not make any power?
- Are we talking about multiple clogged filters or just one?

The truck is an 01 Excursion with 56K miles on it. I changed the fuel filter at 50K when I bought it, so its pretty recent. I buy my regular diesel at truck stops to get good clean fuel, but I bought it used so who's to say what the P.O.'s fuel buying habits were like.

Thanks in advance...

Re: Next tank is B20 - fuel filter life expectancy?

Karl -
My first car I ran BD in was a mercedes TD and started running B100 at 180 thousand miles. It took about 1200 miles to start to feel a little bit of hesitation in the accelerator. It gave me plenty of notice that it was time to change the filter. You won't get stuck on the side of the road if you're a person that pays attention to what your vehicle is saying.I now have over 14 thousand miles on that old car with B100 and changed the filter again last week - only because I thought I should, It didn't ask for it.
I got an Excursion with 48 thousand miles on it about 4 months ago. It never hesitated on me, but at about 1500 miles, I changed the filter just because. This truck purrs like a kitten on B100. I do keep spare filters in all the cars, trucks and tractors that run BD, as you should too. Go ahead and throw about a pint of BD into any gas cars that you have. It has done wonders for my wifes Volvo's fuel system.

Thanks Houndog - this is what I was hoping to hear. Something you said really piqued my curiosity...

Do you mean a pint of B20 or B100?

I've got two gas cars. The race car runs on 100 octane race fuel so I doubt it'll work in that. But the commuter is an 87 BMW with 180K in it, I may have to give this a shot.

Re: Next tank is B20 - fuel filter life expectancy?

Well, I use B100 to put in my wifes gasser because that's what I make. You can definately tell the difference of clean injectors again after BD gets through with them. Don't think there's any better cleaner around.I wish you could put B100 in your gassers tank but I'd hate for you to put 5 times that amount of nasty 'ole diesel in with it. I would definately stick some in your race cars tank also. No one has B100 in your area?

Not that I have found. I'm not sure I want to take that step though...this is something I'm easing into, what with the remainder of the engine warranty and all.

Re: Next tank is B20 - fuel filter life expectancy?

LOL!
I put some B-100 in the gas tank of my portable generator powered with a Briggs 8 HP engine. About 20 cubic inches of 1-cylinder power. The carb insides were gunked up with gasoline deposits because I don't run the thing often enough. Seemed to help a lot...And the gasoline exhaust got the same french-fry odor that my diesel does. Might be a pretty good top-end lube in a gasoline engine, too.
