O-Ring on Stoc Fuel Filter and B100

Has anyone had any problems with the O-Ring leaking on the stock fuel filter due to Biodiesel eating the rubber? I thought I had an oil leak from the high pressure oil pump or possibly the turbo pedestal, so I brought it in to the shop and they said it was just the filter gasket. Any others with this experience? Where can we find a Viton replacement?

Thanks

Well I'm not sure about your system and it's fuel filter, but my 6.9 has been running biodiesel for the past 10k without any leaks or softened hoses.

Believe me, I've been checking. As for a viton replacement, wouldn't McMaster-Carr have a viton o-ring that size (diameter) to replace the stock o-ring?

Re: O-Ring on Stoc Fuel Filter and B100

It's a # 90 sized O-ring (you need two actually). I replaced mine but it was totally unrelated to biodiesel I'm pretty sure. I've only ever run one half tank of BD n my truck, and that was pretty well seperated in time from any problems with the o-rings. I'd just chalk it up to normal wear until or unless repeated failures suggest you have a "situation". I've read in the 7.3 forum that it's nothing uncommon for these things to let go. I got my replacements at the corner hardware store.. I doubt that they're viton. Couldn't hurt to get the viton ones though - I wuold guess mcmaster offers viton in that size.

Replacing them is not a difficult job (hey... I managed to do it...) but I will say that having hands on the smaller side would have been helpful for that job (mine ar big and they were a bit beat up afterwards). If you can find a low profile torx driver ratchet (I've forgotten the size now...) that'll be a well spent $20 or so. I used a torx driver on my 1/4" ratchet and found myself wishing I had something a bit shorter/lower profile.

Good luck.

Charlie

Edit: here's a thread on the subject from the 7.3 forum:
