off-road diesel ?

can somebody educate me ? local gasstations are selling diesel for off-road-use only.. about $1.35 per gallon . they don't sell it into your truck, but into approved canister for your tractor.. can i run this diesel in a regular street truck ?

Re: off-road diesel ?

Uh, yea you can but if you get caught, you will pay dearly! That diesel is non taxed, I believe, thus the cheaper price. It also has DYE in it so the government man can check your tank. If he detects dye in it, you're busted big time!

Re: off-road diesel ?

The fine can be as high as $10,000.00. You had better think about this before you use RED fuel. The dye stays in the fuel even after you add regular diesel. It takes a while to dilute it so you (or the feds) won't notice. Fair warning.

Re: off-road diesel ?

you can run red fuel all you want but must change out your fuel filter twice as often. have been running red on a stroke of mine for 215k miles (farm truck that is). i get red by pulling up with a trailer that has 2-1500 gallon tanks on it . everything i run is diesel even my riding mower hehe.

Re: off-road diesel ?

2 1500 gallon tanks? YIKES.

That's 3000 gallons at 8lbs a gallon? 24,000lbs? 12 tons?

I'm guessing that's a typo and you mean 2 150 gallon tanks?

Don't you need some kind of Hazmat endorsement to haul 24,000 lbs. of fuel?

Biodiesel degrades faster than sugar water and is not considered a environmental hazard.

Re: off-road diesel ?

Bobby,

I think they are talking about off-road petro (dyed diesel), not bio. This would be hazmat.

'Course in my experience w/ government, EPA definition of HAZMAT is: anything OTHER than pure, distilled water, and a wetlands is anything OTHER than Death Valley (but Death Valley is off limits too, cause it has endangered species in it).

I think you are right. I messed up following the discussion. I have bio on the brain. I agree with your assessment of the EPA.

Re: off-road diesel ?

Other than red dye, are there other signs you are running it; more smoke, different color smoke, ect. Also, will it hurt the engine or injectors? I live in Hawaii and the local powers that be dont see much diesel traffic. Plus our avg. diesel #2 cost is $2.43. Just a thought...Thanks, BigPigPSD

Re: off-road diesel ?

Why does it make more smoke? Is it just the die burning off?

Re: off-road diesel ?

Off-road fuel ='s home heating oil. Ask just about any heating oil delivery guy, and in the summer they make most of their runs to construction sites to fuel up trucks/dozers, etc... At least mine does.

[/ QUOTE ] That is so true I am a driver for an oil company and know for sure that home heating oil and off road are 100% the same (as in fuel, tank source and paper work) during summer months, during winter we give 30-40% off rd kero.
