Re: Opinions on best diesel engine for homebrew.

IDI's were always considered great candidates for WVO, but the 7.3 powerstroke, even with its direct injection, has been showing itself to be a great runner on both WVO and bio-diesel.

6.0's are still in experimental mode right now. I dont know what the cummins and duramax guys are doing, or if they have probs.

Re: Opinions on best diesel engine for homebrew.

If you're looking for a car The Mercedes 300D Turbo 81-85 are excellent.
If you can live with less power the 300D pre 81 or 240D makes a great durable alternative fuel engine.
If you are brewing high quality washed fuel it should work fine in direct injection diesels.
If you are not washing I would stick to IDI type engines. These would be pretty much anything from the 80s and early 90s.
Carry spare fuel filters and tools needed to change them. Also some filters need a quart of fuel to prime them, if so carry a quart of diesel, kerosene, or biodiesel.

My 1983 240D Mercedes, with it's screaming, non-turbo 4 speed manual tranny absolutely loves my homebrew. I wash profusedly
