Paper Towel Filter. Bounty the quicker filter outer.

I used 3 GE Smartfilters to filter my WVO between two hot water tanks. I've found that I can rap that first 30 micron filter with paper towels say about 3-4 layers and it catches the initial junk. As my vacuum starts to go bad on that 1st filter I pull it and take a layer of towel off and stick it back in. Vacuum restored and off filtering again. When I first put the paper on I rap a piece of masking tape to hold it together, after I peel back a layer I don't bother with the tape as the towel stays in place. The paper towels are a little longer than the filter so the excess towel favors the bottom of the filter where it won't block off the port for flow. The cool part is I'm saving the oil paper to mix in with my sawdust WVO logs so it will all just get burned. Pretty simple idea and it works for me. Then again I'm still kinda new to all of this. You may be wondering about the vacuum thing, I pull vacuum on the second tank and draw oil through the filters, works great, just have to pull vacuum a little more often as the tank gets full. The only other thing I'm keeping my eye on it the ends of the filters and the indentation that the housing presses into them. Pulling them apart and putting them together may make that seal weak so I'm thinking about felt gaskets which I've seen someone sell before on Ebay just for this purpose. I also filter with one filter on that second tank after the oil has settle for 8 hours whne I pressurize the tank to push the oil through the filter to fill the storeage tanks. I've clogged my first 30 micron Racor after only 1,500 miles in my vehicle but I believe its temperature and fat related.

The Gulf Coast Filter uses a roll of Bounty two ply for engine oil filtration. It works extremely well at getting soot, water and other detritus out of engine oil.

Check out their website, I've seen first hand how well those types of filters work as I have a Frantz on my truck. It uses a roll of TP for the filter and the oil no longer gets coal tar black anymore.

First, the dancing bear is beautiful. Every time I see it I crack a smile.
Wonder how the Frantz would work with WVO in the vehicle?
I have a toilet paper filter for my compressed air in the garage. I'll bet you could even use it. It only has one seal, not sure how much temp it would take though.... Forget what brand it is.

You know, it's funny that you mention this. I just started wrapping my filters with 3 layers of blue shop towels. It seems that I can get quite a bit more through them this way.

Re: Paper Towel Filter. Bounty the quicker filter outer.

I should mention that the Frantz and Gulf Coast filters are bypass filters, I'm not sure if they're setup to receive full oil flow, they are there to remove fine particles smaller than 1 micron, acids and other solvents formed in engine oil.

I do know that Gulf Coast makes what they call a 'fuel polishing' filter assembly that is used to really filter #2 fuel to really clean levels.

Probably wouldn't hurt to give them a call and ask either Frantz or Gulf Coast what they'd think of the idea.
