Are you making biodiesel? If so, the oil quality isn't as important. But... better oil going in makes a better process.
Regardless, settling time is great to drop out the water, hydrogenated glop and particulates. If at all possible, pump from the top of your settling drum.
Most rotary gear pumps need a 50 line per inch screen on the suction line. That translates to about 300 microns. On the discharge side, I use a 100 line screen (150 microns) to filter the oil in preparation for going through the Dieselcraft centrifuge. I'd think that would be good for biodiesel as well.
By the way, you can get 50 line and 100 line washable screens.... no replacement filter elements. That means... no consumable filter media.
