Pumping and filter question.

I've got a 3/4hp pump from northern tool and it screams when I run a batch for filtration.

I'm going through a home depot filter then into a 2u permacool water separator.

It is really pushing hard to get it through.

Would using it as a puller instead of a pusher work better?

I was almost getting a trickle tonight. I bypassed the 2u filter/separator and it ran good, so it is the 2u filter causing the problems.

Is the 5u home depot filter good? I know gas station filters are in the 20u area, I trust my truck's water separator, so is the 2u filter really necessary?

Are you mixing any #2 with the oil, before you filter it? The thicker viscosity is what's hampering your flow IMO.

Can't comment on the HD filter. True, most pump filters are 20 micron but, it's a difference in product being filtered that makes this a mute point... IMO at least. Even with a good supplier of WMO from strictly diesel equipment (no contamination from a gasser), the finer filtration you can sustain, the better off your fuel system will cope.

I wouldn't settle for less than 2u, if I were you.

I just use a air diaphragm pump. I have seen them on e-bay for around $80. The lower flow through the 2 micron doesn't hurt it, it just stops until the pressure drops and then it cycles again and I also have a ball valve on the air hookup so I can control cycle rate. Filter straight WMO at room (basement) temp no problem.

This just in:

Plugged a fuel filter on the way to work this morning. I had to do a roadside repair with an onboard spare. Fleetfilter.com, here I come.

The other night I was in a pinch, so I put in 5 gallons of 5u filtered stuff and added 5 gallons of diesel. I noticed a rough idle before I did that, so I don't know that not filtering to 2u was the exact cause, but I'm sure it didn't help.
