I tried the prewash on my latest batch of Biodiesel. I added water(7.5% of the oil volume) to the processor, after running the process for 2 hours. I let it run for 20 min. and then let the glycerin settle. I got good seperatian, and drained about 7 gallons of glyc off the bottom.
i started mist washing, and this time instead of getting white milky colored water, I got brownish dirty dish-water looking water. Is that normal when doing the prewash?
Are there any other diferences I should look for in this batch since I did a prewash?
I'm useing NaOH, 5g/L + titration. Oil titrated to .7
I tried the prewash too on my current batch, but I used 5% of water. The wash water after the mist wash was milky, but not as milky as my other batch with no prewash. I did get some greysh looking water, but I think it contained food particles from the oil. I used KOH.

so let me get this right, after the mixing, you add water and mix more? (add heat or not?) then let it go through its normal process?

After mixing for 2 hours, you add water and mix for 15-20 minutes. No heat is required, but I added warm water. After that just let it settle as usual.

so with the koh your byproduct is liquid? and your final wash is easy?

I'm still useing the NaOH, and my glycerol has never been solid yet. The last batch I made I did the prewash.
I heated the oil, titrated, added methoxide, ran pump for 2 hours, then added 7.5% water (1.5 gallons in a 20gallon batchof oil) and ran the pump for 20 min. I let settle as normal and drained off about 7 gallons of "glycerol".
As far as the wash, so far it looks like it is washing easier (less soap formation, no creamy layer) and it seems to be getting clean faster.
This is my first batch to do a prewash, so I'll continue to see how it goes and report.
so water will not hurt during in this stage? once i get up and running i will try this!
