Running LPG and H2O with WVO

Can you? What kind of limitations should I set if I can. I plan on adding one or the other in the future, but want to know if it is as safe to do with WVO as it is with diesel. Also, should I still limit myself at 12-14 psi boost in the IDI?

Re: Running LPG and H2O with WVO

I guess it depends on what the cetane rating of the oil you use is. You may need to advance or retard your timing accordingly.

adding propane to the mix is sure to mess with timing again.

Bio-D has a HIGHER cetane rating, not sure what WVO cetane rating would be tho.

Re: Running LPG and H2O with WVO

well, I plan on being able to run the truck on either WVO or D2, depending on the temperature, the length of the trip and the power I need. So, I can not change the timing too much at all, but would like to have the benefit of water or LPG if I need it on both fuels. I am thinking that I should find out how to check the cetane level of my WVO, and use additives and or RUG to bring it to where it is within a point or so of my D2. How bout that?

The compression is kind of high on the IDI's to run much more than this. In fact, if it's a 6.9 block, with 3/8 head bolts, it's probably already too much. Are you running a stud kit, or bolts?

Re: Running LPG and H2O with WVO

Well if the timing is only slightly advanced or slightly retarded, it won't cause much problems. I think most veggie oil has a cetane value of around 45-50, if you are running summer #2 with stanadyne or PS, you're probably close to that anyway. By all means find out what your oil's value is if you can and talk to a fuel injection shop about the timing issue. I don't see why water injection or LPG inj. wouldn't work with WVO just as well as with diesel.

Re: Running LPG and H2O with WVO

From what I've read veggie oil burns just slightly hotter that diesel. Therefore water (which has the promary effect of cooling the exhaust temps) should be just fine. Propane should also be ok with WVO, but you might want to be slightly more moderate with it than with diesel.
