Running WVO with just filtering.

After doing a lot of research. It seems we can run filtered WVO without any other mods. (especially in my hot state) they just recomend keeping a filter handy in case you have a problem and changing it evey 10k. Anyone else come to this same conclusion. I am gathering the gear to start picking up oil and give it a try. They have staed that purging is vital to get a good cold start.

Re: Running WVO with just filtering.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember hearing that WVO being used at a temperature under 160° will not flow properly, possibly clogging the fuel filter early and certainly putting an extra strain on fuel pumps.

However, I believe that a 50/50 diesel/WVO mix can be run in warm weather with no modifications.

Re: Running WVO with just filtering.

I'm not running an exact 50/50 mix of wvo and diesel, but i live in the hot state of FL. Its about 60/40, filtered wvo, i'm using an old whole house waterfilter right now and seems to be working well after i let the oil settle. I also have an electric transfer pump to actually force the oil through the filter to try and get it cleaner, and faster. i also add power service (uggh i forgot which one, its the one in the white bottle not grey). I run that in the front tank. and i run straight diesel in the rear tank if i have a problem. (which i haven't especially in the summer heat). I'm contemplating the idea of getting another inbed tank to hold more veggie oil mix, and let that feed into the front tank, and when i do that i would heat the tank just because i'm going through all the trouble. Again i'd keep the rear for diesel just in case!

Re: Running WVO with just filtering.

The Direct Injection motors are a big Question Mark right now. However the IDI guys claim no problems with running stright WVO.

I believe there is a sponsor on this site who has offered to do a complete injector check for free for someone who runs WVO on their DI motor for an extended period.

The fear is that the DI motors arnt quite hot enough to burn the fuel correctly or something. The risk is coking the injectors and ring stick if you dont get a complete burn.

Re: Running WVO with just filtering.

What's the operating temperature on the PSD?

Assuming it's anywhere near the 190° that the IDI's run at, and that the fuel's being burned completely (which I would assume it is, unless you've heavily overfueled the truck), I have difficulty envisioning a problem...but I don't claim to know much about the PSD's either. Re: Running WVO with just filtering.

well, the motors both run 190-203 (if you have a 203 psd special thermistat), but its how the fuel is ignited.

The PSD injects all of the fuel directly into the cylinder (all at once, or split-shot depending on injector type). However the IDI engines inject into a pre combustion chamber before the full load is injected. This allows for the fuel load to be fired into an already lit chamber. The tolerance on the injector are lower also I believe.

Everything I have read about WVO is the IDI is fine, but everyone's skiddish to run it too strong on a DI motor.

Re: Running WVO with just filtering.

I guess I'll run a blend first and see how it goes.

Re: Running WVO with just filtering.

was speaking to land yacht about this--the only problem with the idi's is you may start to burn the gps off slowly--which i did at first--but he said to keep the timing down--second-he said you wont burn the gps in a psd as the position of them in the fire chamber is different--so i say the psd is a good candidate--but the only problem is is that the fuel rail is dead end--how to get the wvo out of the fuel rail prior to shutdown--never thought of that, right??? but someone awhile back made a system so the fuel wont dead head---didnt the later psd's have continuous flow rails--with hoses at each end????? and with bio in the psd--nooo problem---

Re: Running WVO with just filtering.

Here is a great link about this. Linky

Apparently, DI engines tend to get the SVO on the cylinder walls, and IDI engines dont do that as much.

Re: Running WVO with just filtering.

There was a news story in the LA Times about a SoCal restraunt owner that put a Gresiel set up in a new PSD Excusion. He had it great, all the oil he could use. I belive the issue with the PSD is the viscosity of the oil, thats why you must heat the oil. IDI not so critical but most always deal with the it by heat or thining.
