Scrounging for filtering parts...

In my quest constantly improve my WVO filtering system, I am always tweaking my design. If anything... I have learned that the best systems are necessarily designed... they simply have evolved.

I am looking for an adapter that I can use for a spin-on oil filter... something with a 1" (or so) in/out opening that I can use for filtering WVO.

I have been looking at replacement car parts for a bit, but haven't really found what I am looking for. The closes I have found is at Red Line Pumps... they have a 'spin on filter adapter' that fits the bill, but it costs $50 (+5 S/H).

If nothing else materializes, I might go down that route.

Any input on spin-on oil filters that get me to around 5 microns or lower would also be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Scrounging for filtering parts...

TSC has the same Goldenrod for $19 and extra filters for $7.50. If TSC (Tractor Supply Company)is not in your area, you may want to check with a farm supply store like Bomgaar's or Fleet.

Re: Scrounging for filtering parts...

One more idiot question:

Do most "spin on" oil filters fit the same "mold".... meaning that will an adapter like the one pointed to at Northern Tool work for most spin-on oil/fuel filters, or am I limited by the manufacturer of the adapter?

I would like the ability to toy with different filters and micron ratings... etc etc..

Re: Scrounging for filtering parts...

Try a semi junk yard.
I use an old filter mount from a semi to filter my bio before use. It hangs on the side of a 55 gal barrel.
You can use different micron filters and length filters with it.
I don't know about using WVO with them but it would be an inexpensive thing to play with.

Re: Scrounging for filtering parts...

I use a wix 33528 for my truck filter and will so be using it for my final cleaning before entering aux tank. They cost about $8.50 at orileys with discounts and they ordered my head for it for $20. A 33528 will filter to 2 microns and is a big filter.

Re: Scrounging for filtering parts...

Check the filters specs. Will depend on Dia. and thread size pitch/count.
The spin on I use is 1" x 13 threads per inch. Can not recall the diam. But any other filte rwith same sepecs would srew right on.

Re: Scrounging for filtering parts...

Do (some?) engine oil filters have a 'bypass'? How does that work? If the oil filter on an engine plugged up and stopped supplying oil, it would be fatal.

Wonder why I never thought about before... mind expansion by WVO! haha

So, is this a quest to save some $$ by using oil filters in leu of fuel filters? I'm curious how it works out, specifically gallons of filtered fuel per dollar of filter. PLEASE keep me posted

Re: Scrounging for filtering parts...

The "Bypass" that I am familiar with is on the filter housing, not part of the filter itself. If the filter were to clog to the point that the oil will not pass through it the bypass opens allowing unfiltered oil to get to the critical parts of the engine. Changing the oil filter at the proper intervals is extremely important to prevent the bypass from activating.

Well, stopped by the official "Wix dealer" here in the glorious Moscow, ID... and the folks there were nice enough to both say "*** are you trying to with this thing?" as well as spend about an hour with me looking through catalogs and figuring out the best approach.

Here is what I know... or at least what I think I know....

1) Hydraulic filters are very spendy... because they must be able to filter very high volumes of oil (like 40 gpm) at very high pressures. These filters can cost in the neighborhood of $50-60.

2) Fuel vs oil. Not too many oil filters have a solid micron ratings, and of those few that do, we didn't find one below about 10 microns (give or take.. nothing we found ever said "absolute micron rating"). My guess (and their guess) is that they really don't have a need to. Many/most fuel filters, however, have ratings all the way down to about 2 microns... but the fear we have is that they will plug way too quickly with the grease particles.

3) We found that the fuel filter for my 7.3 PSD only filters down to 10 microns... so even though I am planning on an FN74 system for my WVO conversion, which means that my grease will never run through the diesel fuel filter, it seems sorta unnessary to filter below what the dino-diesel filters down to (unless someone else here says different).

(What micron level are WVO folks out there filtering down to, anyway)?

That allows me room to play with oil filters... .not necessarily fuel filters... and the oil filters (generally) were a smidge cheaper.

That's what I know for now.

Re: Scrounging for filtering parts...

Oil filters may be a bit cheaper but I would not trust one as a final filter so not that cost effective.

I use a Fleetgaurd FS1000 as my final pre-filter as well as my truck filter. 10 micron rating at 98% effeciency. Check a Peterbilt dealer, as they have the best prices I've found. About $20 for a filter base and $13 per filter. Usually cheaper in bulk too by about 15-20 percent.

Prior to my FS1000 in my prefilter setup I am using a cheap, $16 GE water filter from Home Depot GXWH04F . Available at the stores I've checked but not online. Lowes has a similar one, but twice the $$$. I use the foam looking filter element, 5-15 micron rated, FXUSC $8 for 2 at home depot. It's life can be extended by wrapping with bounty paper towels, approx 15 micron near as I can tell.
