Second filter

I'm still wanting to do a conversion.

I already have two tanks so I want to add a second/separate fuel filter.
I'm leaning towards WMO for now and was wondering if this filter will work.
Perma-Cool Fuel Filter and Water Separator.
It's abut the least expensive I've seen.

I do plan to pre-filter before putting anything in the tanks.

Also, in the stock configuration, the fuel pump pushes the fuel through the filter and then to the IP.

Will it create a problem if I move the filters before the fuel pump so that the fuel is pulled through them?

This will all be on a 1984 E350 6.9L IDI

push/pull

Longwolf,

I have the same question rather than an answer. I am in the same position, relatively, and wonder what rules there might be as far as pulling or pushing fuel. There are some threads that I remember reading, so if and when I see them i will connect you. Thanks to anyone with the answer.

I used the Perma-cool fuel filter for my aux fuel tank filter. Then the first thing I did was replace it with a larger filter.

For my pre-pump filter, I got the filter head and filter direct form fleetfilter.com, a little cheaper than the Perma-cool setup.

See the attached .pdf of a list of Wix/Napa fuel filters and the heads that will fit them. Don't like Napa/Wix, just cross to your favorite brand.

Good luck.

Al

Thx Al!

Looks like the 33005- Fuel Filter-$12.89
with the 24770- Filter Base-$20.72 will do nicely

I've thought of one possible problem with using the pump to pull through the filters.
How would you bleed the air out when you replace a filter?

And while on that track, I haven't seen any filter heads with a 'tire stem' style bleeder like the stock filter has.

The 24770- Filter Base I'm looking at has two unused ports, would you just add a valve stem to one of them to use as the air bleeder?

I *think* what I did with mine was pre-fill my pre-pump filter than did the "turn the key for 30 seconds" bit three or so times.

When we installed the ITP pre-pump filter on my friend's 2001, we just cycled the key about a half dozen times until we saw the fuel pressure gauge respond (he had the ITP regulated return system with fuel gauge).

Either way, it's not that big of a deal.

Hope this helps.

I recently added a pre-pump fuel filter to my 02 7.3 and the unit I found allows me to select elements from 2, 10, or 30 micron ratings in 45, 60, 90, or 120 G.P.H. flow rates. The other features I liked about this filter head was that it has a built-in primer pump with a bleed valve on the top. Should I ever add a second fuel tank, it also has two inlet / outlet ports so I will be able to plumb both tanks into one pre-pump filter. I used 3/8” fuel injection hose with a “J30R9” rating which is designed to hold up very well with diesel / bio-diesel.

Looks great!
What did it cost you?

One thing, if you add the second tank so that you can use wvo or wmo, you'll want a separate filter for each tank.
Otherwise you'd have very long purge times when switching back to diesel.

FirstLight,
Thanks for the nice comments!

longwolf,
I was able to buy the complete filter assembly for $85.00.
Thanks for the heads-up on the purge time required before shut down after switching to back to diesel. I agree with you, two filters would be the way go unless you are going to run diesel in both tanks.
