having trouble getting grease now with all the recyclers paying it. i have a line on getting some shortening from a donut shop (he gets this stuff in a 50 lb block from his supplier). i was wondering if it is ok to use to make bio with the methanol and lye combo? and if so once it is made will it loose the geling characteristic or will i just have to mix some regular diesel with it after processing when i put it in my truck. just wondering if anyone has had bad bad luck using this.

I have had very good results from shortening and lard. Both are of a soft white creamy consistancy but they are also unused. I just made a 128L batch using 22 liters of methanol and 730 grams of KOH. After running through some puralite beads it looks like water. Have made probably over 500 gallons with no problems as of yet. A little trickier to deal with since its a solid, I use the good ole texas sun to melt it while still in the buckets.
